HDD in caddy slow read/write speeds

I have a TOSHIBA 1TB HDD which is inside a caddy. When I copy a file from the HDD, the copying starts from 20mb/s to 0KB to Calculating and eventually, the explorer crashes. I open Task Manager and the Disk shows at 100%.

But when I plug in another 320GB HITACHI drive, the read/write on that drive is fine. I can play a movie fine from this HDD but not on the other.

    What could be the reason?

Your caddy is most likely not compatible with the larger sized hard drives.

Is your caddy USB 2.0 or 3.0? You need USB 3.0 for speed.

    Hi there

Older HDD might also be IDE rather than SATA.

USB3 enclosures for SATA drives are usually fine. If it's an old IDE drive I'd either "Toss it" or just use rarely for off site backup e.g after imaging your system copy the image to the slow disk and store off line.

Another possibility -- try and convert the 1TB drive to GPT. In general there's no reason not to have MBR for any drives these days - with the possible exception of the boot drive if your computer doesn't have UEFI boot settings in BIOS -- any machine made within last few years will certainly have UEFI mode options - MBR mode will be shown often in the BIOS boot options as "Legacy Mode".

    Cheers

It could be that the larger drive needs more available power to access the disk efficiently, (or it could be just as likely that one brand of drive will require more than another).

Some caddies will only work when they have a power supply attached, some will work from the USB power only, a lot will work with or without a power supply, but will transfer quicker with the extra power boost of the power supply. There is also the case that power supplies vary in their output current and manufacturers only supply a basic power supply which supplies less than the caddy can use so could be replaced.

It appears that the caddy in this case is one of the USB powered units that depend on the power available from the port on the computer, which varies - Use a "Fast Charge" output if available and the user guide for the Caddy states this is acceptable.

I do have a number of External drives that are in Caddies (powered), but my main need is met my a powered USB docking station which I can just drop a drive into at any time, (Hot Swap) great for Client system repairs as i can pop the drive out of the laptop or PC and quickly back it up

So there is no way to use this 1TB drive inside a caddy? I have attached an image of my HDD.
