Yet another desperate Win 10 Spotlight "plese help me" thread...

    Hello all :)

Well, the title says it all. I love Windows Spotlight feature, but about a year ago it just stopped working. But here's the thing - not only on my desktop, but on my laptop as well. And they are different enough for this to be annoying, as I firmly believe I should be able to make it work somewhere. Desktop is a local account only, laptop is with a linked MS account. Desktop has a firewall (I switched it off for the past 5 days trying to fix Spotlight), Laptop doesn't. I've tried laptop consistently on 3 different wifi networks, nada. Both PCs are fully updated Windows 10 Pros.

What's bizarre is that about 4-5 weeks ago, I suddenly got a Spotlight image on the login/lock screen after a long time! But after 2 days, again the dreaded stock photo of a lake with red backpack (god, I've grown to hate that image)

    What I've tried:

    1. Simple switching "to picture/slideshow" and then back to Spotlight
    2. Made sure that Settings and Edge are allowed to run in the background
    3. Brink's delete and re-register Windows Spotlight (2 or 3 times)
    4. Kept antivirus and firewall off, PC has been on for most of the day
    5. Network reset

I am obviously keeping a close eye on ASSETS folder for the past 4-5 days, and apart from about 15 small images that you get on Spotlight re-registration (small icons of cards, calculator spotify, some media player, etc), nothing further gets downloaded there. Those small images sit there with date/time timestamp of when the Spotlight was re-registered, and absolutely nothing else gets to that folder for days now.

I will not reinstall Windows fully just for Spotlight, but honestly, it's ridiculous that I can't get this fixed!! What else is there for me to try? Could someone perhaps post me the screenshot of expected Spotlight registry keys and values?

    Thanks in advance

    P. S. My wife's laptop is on Windows 11 Pro - Spotlight not working either for her! I'm starting to think this is something personal

Ah yes, I forgot something which might be a clue, but I doubt it. On my Lock Screen settings, I don't see the small icons at all for "Choose which apps show quick status on the lock screen" - they are all generic grey pluses, but these are exactly the small images that get downloaded to my ASSETS folder upon the Spotlight re-registration, and just sit there:

That seems a bit suspicious to me, but not sure what to try next.

    Please see e.g.

Windows Spotlight broken, not downloading images
noting posts #4 and #9 for example, comment in #10 (patience etc)

(An in-place upgrade repair install keeps all progs and data like any 'upgrade' procedure - tutorial available if needed, download iso file of your current major build, 4 steps to start).

    Thanks Dalchina,

That was one of the threads I've seen over the past few days, and regarding #9, yes, absolutely, done it several times.

Regarding post #4 and in-place repair store, I know it actually keeps the programs and settings, I had to do it 5-6 times in the past for other reasons, but it takes a long time, and once it has really messed up my installation so I had to do it from clean. Also, it's good advice to completely ignore "do you like this picture", I'M NEVER TOUCHING THAT AGAIN IF I FIX IT

Re #10, I realise it takes a bit of time, but people are mostly saying 1-2 days, not 5...

The software design of the bug prone Spotlight functionality is dire. I use the Dynamic Theme app to avoid most of the issues.

Yes, it's quite unbelievable how flaky Spotlight is, and how such a seemingly simple feature can be broken so easily.

Has anyone stumbled upon a guide somewhere which lists out all registry keys for Spotlight?

Note the recommendation (again) for the dynamic theme - for - yes- Win 11 (i.e. people still sometimes struggle with Spotlight with Win 11).

My experience: long ago with a much older build I remember having a Spotlight problem - but not for years.
My last clean install was years ago.. and I do update and uninstall/install programs.

On top of the other excellent advice a user seems to require both Edge & Bing as default in order for spotlight to work.

I'm not sure that is correct. I have just asked two friends that have Spotlight working 100% (one on 10 and another on 11), one has Firefox as a default browser, and the other has Chrome.

That was the general suggestion from Microsoft.

Well, I'm sure they would make that suggestion, but I highly doubt that they made an explicit condition in the package that it relies on actually having a browser set as a default browser.

I will check my Dad's PC soon when I can get on Teamviewer. I know Spotlight works for him, and I'm 99% he uses Chrome.
