    Reset Windows 10 background and text colours to default settings

    I've had several problems resetting Windows 10 over the past few days. Having almost sorted things out, I need to restore the default background theme and colours. I stupidly made some changes but now I cannot see the text in the search box. Is there a registry entry that can be changed/ deleted to restore this.

    Many thanks

    Unless you removed something that shouldn't have been removed there is no registry edit needed. Just Right click the Desktop and select Personalization. There are multiple options and choices there on the Left side, Backgrounds, Colors and there are Multiple options there, Themes, etc. You'll have to experiment there on what will make things work for you again. It truly is super easy.

    Messing about with colours

    Unfortunately it was experimenting with Themes and Colours that created my problems. At one point I had black text on a black backround!!!! - Still I've managed to sort that but I had hoped that there was a 'Windows classic' default theme that I could go back to.

    If there isn't - my bad luck, but thanks for your help anyway

    No, there is no default theme. That went away with Windows XP I believe. Not sure exactly what it is that you want however so guess I am limited in my suggestions. Can you possibly post a print screen to show what you now have and what you don't want? And are you on Windows Home or Pro? Makes a difference.

    Hi Notnats. Thanks for your reply - I am using Win 10 Home Edition. I recently had to do a reset which I assumed would take me back to Win 8 (my laptop OS at the time of purchase) but it automatically updated to Win 10 but left the colours very 'feeble'. This is a screen snap which shows a very pale bg. The original should have been darker but when I change it, it seems to change everything. Any advice will be most welcome.

    When you do a reset of a computer that has been upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 the ability to reset back to Windows 8.1 is only available for 30 days following the upgrade. This is why your computer was not reset back to Windows 8.1. Why did you feel the need to do the reset? Generally this is only recommended if you are having stability of performance issues or, you are selling the computer and want to clean it up.

    Now for your color problems try this;
    In the Personalization settings, click on Themes and then on Windows image under the Themes title.
    Once you do that then go to Colors. Scroll down to the two options;
    Start, Taskbar and Action Center - put a check mark there
    Right below you should also see Title Bars and window borders. Put a check mark there also.
    Let me know if this helps.

    Last week I had some serious registry / profile problems that I simply couldn't fix. The general consensus from the various forums suggested a complete refresh but on the understanding that I would lose all of my apps and docs AND that I would be returned to Win 8. I was so sick of it all that I decided to take this nuclear option and found that it loaded Win 10. Having reinstalled everything I noticed the BG colours weren't right and almost created a new set of problems.

    Re your suggestion on personalization - it 'sorted' worked but I noticed the option for Start, Taskbar & Action Centre was greyed out and I couldn't change this. By chance a search took me to a similar problem solved on this forum which has worked a treat. Here's the link if you are interested: I cannot select start, taskbar, & action center in color settings.

    Many thanks for your help.
