At least it still looks like a Jag, pays respect to some of the classic designs I grew up with
Too many from the Ford days used the Ford Parts bin for parts, which is fine for things you don't see, but not the front grill which sets the design shape - with those you weren't sure if you had a Jag in the rear View mirror or a family saloon
That was just the X-Type. It was a Ford Contour/Mondeo with a Jaguar body. They were all-wheel-drive because the platform could only be either FWD or AWD. Ford realized no one would buy a FWD Jaguar.
The S-Type was a platform Jaguar had started to develop when they were still part of British Leyland. It got shelved when Ford bought them in the late 80s. In the 90s, with the popularity of the BMW 5 Series, Ford thought Jag needed a mid sizer also. That old design was pulled out again, renamed DEW and developed into the S-Type. To amortize the cost of the development, they modified the platform and put it under the Lincoln LS and the Ford Thunderbird.
The XJ and XK were always all Jaguar and totally unmistakable.
About 10 years ago I went to the car lot to buy a used Jaguar 4L S type and came home with a 1.1L diesel Vauxhall Corsa - wife wasn't impressed
