    Tuneup plus results were good.

It's unknown whether there were any significant WD problems.

It's best to check the drive with Sea Tools long generic and HD Sentinel.

Consider using an external keyboard or on screen keyboard.

    So
13A - often driver related apparently
F7 "usually an errant driver - or malware"
7F - hardware or ram failure
4E -pfn list corrupt - seems to have various different causes - faulty hardware, ram or storage failing due to overheating, driver issues or malware.

Will do the longer ram and ssd tests when I get chance later.

So could a malfunctioning keyboard cause all this? Laptop now seems to working fine but letter a still intermittently doesn't work.

Which is why I clean installed on an identical used laptop which is having similar issues - corrupt files after clean install. Hence suspecting the graphics driver that only Intel seems to have an updated one for. Or, in that laptop's case, possibly faulty iso on usb. Going to try installing Windows 10 on that one from an existing usb iso that I know is fine.

The Norton drivers were misbehaving in one of crashes.

So far there was no recurrence reported.

Thanks. Well it works ok for a bit and then the screen and mouse completely freeze. Ctrl alt delete doesn’t work, or escape and the only way out of it is to press the shut down button. So not even able to finish backing up files to an external drive - it froze part way through. I do have then backed up already but wanted to do it again on a different external drive just in case.

See if the computer can reboot into safe mode (shift + restart).

Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10

On a working computer create a bootable Windows 10 Media Creation Tool (MCT) Windows 10 iso).

    Download Windows 10 ISO File

Files may be able to be backed using Windows Recovery Environment (RE) > notepad

Thanks - I have a bootable Windows 10 usb. When I switched it on again it blue screened again. Error message was IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Switched it off again. Booted into the HP Hardware diagnostic test and ran the memory test on a loop for four and a half hours - can't remember how many iterations but it was a lot. Over 30 maybe. Result was fine - no issues. After that it just restarted normally again. Could it simply be that the drive is too full? It's a 1tb drive with about 250gb free. I copied a lot of stuff over onto recently after my other laptop packed up (long story).

See if the laptop is stable or unstable while running continuously in safe mode (two to three days).

The longer the continuous run the better the testing conditions.

    Thanks

Thanks. The good news is I’ve got a spare laptop installed and up and running so have something to use while I’m sorting the other one out.

The not good news is it seems my external 5tb drive (recently bought) has had some corruption. I tested it (briefly) and it said it was fine. But when I went to copy files across the folders all came out a bit mixed up. Eg some documents folders in with the pictures folders and vice versa. So a lot of sorting out to do from older backups on a different external drive.

And the other external drive I tried to bs k up on the other day might be corrupted now too as the computer crashed while I was using it.

So an sorting files out first at the moment.

I’ve taken the ssd out and put it in an enclosure and plugged it into the spare laptop and copying files from that. Fingers crossed

So - I put the original 500gb Optane drive back in the laptop to see what happened with a different drive in it. Went through the OOBE set up, just got to the end of it but before it got to the desktop, it blue screened again. Different stop code this time - Memory Management. So looks like it might be the memory? As well as a faulty keyboard.

I have new memory coming for the other laptop so can swap the memory over then and see if it makes a difference.

Swap testing is the best test.

If swap testing were unavailable the use Memtest86+

Thanks. It looked very clean inside when I took the ssd out - the odd bit of dust which was cleaned out - but nothing black or melted!

Swapped the ram. Didn't use the Optane Drive as it had issues. Put in a 500gb ssd that had been used recently and is fine. Installed Windows 11 - which all went smoothly no issues at all. Seems to be running ok. Downloaded the HP Hardware test again and keyboard now tests as ok.

So I'm guessing it was failing ram and affecting other hardware? Or maybe failing ram and failing ssd and the original ssd just hasn't gone yet. I got all my files off it so spare laptop is set up and backed up.

Not really relevant to this but when I put the original 500gb optane ssd back in I got lots of blue screens, freezing and crashes - not surprising as it said the disk was too full - it was trying to install windows apps into the 32gb optane part of the drive and had that 32gb as Drive c and the main drive as drive D. Very confusing - but it was a horrible drive anyway, with the optane. So put a normal ssd in.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the keyboard anyway. Ran quite a few tests with the HP hardware diagnostics including a stress test of the CPU and all passed. I'll try using the laptop more tomorrow and see if it holds up.

Considering everything started to crash shortly after a power cut during a storm, is it possible the ram and original ssd were damaged by that? (Along with the external drive as well).
