After system restore, I got a Critical Process Died BSOD.

First post that explains what happened:
Fix You've been signed in with a temporary profile in Windows 10

    Problem start date: 6/14/2023

After a system restore, my Dell Inspiron 5555 laptop has not been able to boot normally and instead has been booting on the Windows recovery drive. It starts booting up, but then it has the face and at the bottom in smaller font it says "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED." Afterwards, the Automatic Repair page appears. I read in the posting instructions I'm supposed to include the Windows version, but since the laptop isn't booting correctly, I'm not sure how to get the WIndows 10 version. When trying to undo the system restore, the system restore box said that I needed to enable system protection. I'm wondering if there's a way to do this in the command prompt and if this is even a solution. I am no longer concerned with saving system settings and if undoing the system restore will have the same "We can't sign in to your account" problem I will definitely accept profile migration as the solution.

Details on the system restore I did:

Hi, just a couple of notes:
I read in the posting instructions I'm supposed to include the Windows version, but since the laptop isn't booting correctly, I'm not sure how to get the WIndows 10 version.
Thanks for picking up on that. If you boot your PC from a bootable disk e.g. to a command prompt- more convenient if you have a live boot disk- you can get the build number from system file properties. Not all will be the most current number, but close.

    E.g.
After system restore, I got a Critical Process Died BSOD.-1.jpg
There's also a way to get it from a registry hive, but that's a little more complicated.

Posting screenshots: the preferred method is to use forum features thus:

    Tutorial available.

I assume you haven't yet started to use 3rd party disk imaging routinely, as is endlessly recommended here- else you could have avoided all this difficulty and restored a disk image of your O/S created before this happened.
E.g. Macrium Reflect (free still available), Aomei Backupper (Chinese), O&O Diskimage (license fee - often given away as lifetime previous build...).

Test the drive using Sea Tools bootable long generic test

    Long Generic test result:

    a) pass > perform a custom install

    b) fail > manually backup files > replace drive > clean install

A custom install installs a fresh version of Windows 10 and saves files to Windows.old.
Drivers and applications need to be reinstalled.
Important files are restored from Windows.old.

Both custom and clean install will require a bootable Windows 10 iso.

Find a flash drive that you can format (> or = 8 GB).

    Find a working Windows computer.

Create a bootable Windows 10 Media Creation Tool (MCT) (Windows 10 iso).

    Sorry for the late response.

    Shortened version of what happened:

I ran a full virus scan using Windows Defender.
The power went out and back on.
The laptop shut down during the scan.
I turned the laptop back on, and it booted up correctly.
It said it could not sign me in to my account, and gave me a temporary account.
I transferred all files from the C:\Users\(User) so the files are safe.
I did a system restore with a date before what happened.
The laptop gave me a BSOD that said CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. It took me to a page that said "Windows couldn't load correctly.

I have access to the control panel and I'm hoping there's a way to undo the system restore, and I think I was able to find the system restore I did, but the problem was system protection wasn't enabled. I tried something that involved volume shadow copies but I don't remember exactly what that was. Whatever it was, it didn't work.

Can I use control panel to fix the problem, or is this something worse?

    Thank you!

Referring to my previous post- without a disk image created before this happened, which would allow you to restore your PC to 'as was', assuming your hardware is sound I think you could be unlucky.

See recommendations for disk check in zbook's post - you could also start with Crystal Diskinfo (portable version available) so one way or another you can check your disk whether by connecting it to another PC or booting your PC from a live boot disk, for example.

transferred all files from the C:\Users\(User) so the files are safe.
Assuming you're referring to the appropriate folder, and if you're referring to files in e.g. Documents, Pictures etc, yes, those would be safe.

And anyway, you would have already had a backup of at least your personal files, even if you hadn't been using disk imaging to secure your whole O/S and data ... I hope.

The drive needs to be tested.

If it fails then replace the drive > clean install windows 10 > install drivers and applications > restore manually backed up files

If it passes then keep the drive > perform either

    a) a custom install > install drivers and applications > restore files from windows.old

    b) a clean install > install drivers and applications > restore manually backed up files

If the drive passes Sea Tools bootable then make sure additional drive tests are performed after installing windows:

    a) Full error or surface scan: HD Tune or Macrorit

    b) SMART: Crystal Disk info or HD Sentinel

The system restore point was labeled "Windows Module Installer" and I'm pretty sure the type was "Installer" although I'm not sure if this helps. I just assumed that if I did a system restore, I'd be able to undo the system restore. But I guess it's possible it was not a normal system restore point. I'm starting to think that the only possible solution is to reinstall Windows 10. If that's true, does it cost extra since I already had Windows 10, or does it have to be repurchased?

shouldnt cost any extra. If win10 was installed on consumer motherbosrd the activation should be registered on ms servers

oem motherboards usually come with key in the firmware which is picked up by the installation media
