Precision 5550 hang/freeze

Are you running VMs? I ask because, a) I can see you run VMWare, and b) two of the three dumps in your data collector set indicate a Microsoft driver called vmsp.sys as the driver holding the IRP that's causing the power state failure...

I'm not at all sure what that driver does, but it seems to be associated with the Hyper-V Virtual Switch Extension Adapter. Perhaps a VM (virtual?) device is failing to change power state properly?

One of the dumps identifies a different driver, and this is much more likely to be the root cause...

The rtump64x64.sys driver is part of the Realtek USB FE/1GbE/2.5GbE/5GbE NIC Adapter driver. The version you have is 9 months old may have been updated...

I'd suggest that (initially at least) you check your motherboard vendor's website for an updated driver for the LAN adapter.

BTW. I see you have OpenVPN installed, was the VPN connected when the system failed?

Wow thanks for those details. I do use both Hyper-V and VMWare but they were not open last night when it froze. Same with OpenVPN. It's installed but wasn't in use when it occurred last.

The "Realtek USB FE/1GbE/2.5GbE/5GbE NIC Adapter driver" you mention is from an Anker USB-C hub as this model does not have an Ethernet port. I'll check for an updated one from their site.

The driver from Realtek's site was slightly newer (10.55.20.823). Updated it.

Same thing happened last night. Left it on with a few MS Edge tabs open and woke up this AM with the fans running at 100%, black screen, and it being locked up. Had to hold down the power button again to force it off.

I did notice in the eventvwr that there was an error with the built-in Wi-Fi adapter despite it looking fine in the devmgr, but I'll reinstall it anyway.

And then the system is rebooted several hours later. It certainly looks as though there has been an issue with the WiFi adapter.

I did reinstall the driver, but it was already the newest version. Also, it looked fine in the device manager prior to re-installing it. Odd how I only see this issue when it's left on, untouched overnight and never experience any problems while I'm using the machine.

*Updated it just now to use the Intel driver, as it was slightly newer.

Enable and Disable Driver Verifier in Windows 10.

Plan to run the WDV tool for 48 hours with various test settings.

Start with these settings:
a) Test only these three drivers: nvlddmkm.sys, igdkmd64.sys, and rtump64x64.sys
b) Start with the three customized tests displayed in the TF link.

If there is no immediate BSOD the open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:

verifier /querysettings
