As mentioned the NTL servers have been turned off so this may be why you cannot access the account. I’d create the account again with the virginmedia.com servers.
Also are you currently a virginmedia subscriber?
I'm not altogether sure whether "copying" settings across was the right process. Need more details ....
what was copied (where from - directory/folder/path)
where was it copied to (directory/folder/path)
Most email programs require some process of export and import. Copying whole folders from one system to another doesn't always end in success.
What type of email account - POP or IMAP - if IMAP there was no need to copy anything, emails would be auto reloaded from the mail server once the email client was setup with the account.
Try another email client, e.g. Thunderbird from Mozilla (Firefox) or eMClient (both freeware)
Check the settings with the online setup details from your ISP
Can you access your email via the IPS web based "post office" (assuming they have one)?
What is strange, then, is that my old machine, configured with ntlworld.com servers, works, whilst my newer machine doesn't, whether it's configured with ntlworld.com servers or virginmedia.com servers.
I am a virginmedia subscriber.

Copied my full email address, my username, and the relevant server addresses (imap.ntlworld.com:993:1 and smtp.ntlworld.com:465:1) exactly as they are on my old machine which can access my email account no problem.
Since I have access to my emails on my old machine I'm happy to do it that way until I can sort this out.
Thanks idgat.
Those are old settings --- and a zillion people here already told you that those are obsolete settings.
These are the new settings --- even for ntlworld.com email users.

I assume you have set 'allow access' to email?
and if necessary allow the specific app further down that screen. I don't use Mail myself, and have hardly ever gone to the privacy settings - not knowing they existed until my just-connected webcam would not work a month or so ago - it never occurred to me that something I connected up would be blocked without any indication. So helpful of MS.

You don't usually fill in those port numbers after the colon, they are automatically obtained from your Account during setup.
Later on when looking in server details those port numbers will show up, or they may not appear at all like on an Outlook Mail Account.
It can be a bit more difficult with older ISP provided Mail Accounts, The Mail App 'thinks' for sometime before success.
