Don't know if this is the right place or not but - in the cruel world of technology, I am unable to install the software for my Western Digital My Book - because it is too old.
All of my documents are on that drive. I am not looking for WD support - I just need to install the software. Does anyone know of a workaround for such a tacky business model. Thanks.

What software do you want to install? And why? External dives should just work, without software?
If you're talking about the proprietary bloatware that come with some drives .... NO!! The first thing I do with any new USB device is delete (all) the partition(s) and recreate a single blank new partition. Removes all the software being forced down the user's throat.
EDIT L If you've already been trapped into thinking that, say, the security software is a good idea, unfortunately this is a classic example (and a warning to others} why it's NOT. Sorry

4 What precautions have you taken to ensure that nothing you are trying to do can affect your files on that disk?

Hello and thank you to all - it is a western digital my book which I purchased in 2011. I believe it has to be installed for my system to see it. I plugged it into my Dell and it did not show up so I thought I needed to install software for it. If not, why isn't the Dell seeing it.
Speaking of the Dell, after 2 clean installs and a reset as of yesterday (done over a week or so) this morning it would not boot.
My fixit guy says he doesn't think it's the hard drive but might be the controller -- he will take the WD SSD out and replace it with one of his -- if all still works, we will know it was in fact the WDSSD. He will not charge me until we determine the pc is working with his drive -
I really doubt that.
Get the more important subject, the internal WD SSD, sorted out first.
Then, if File explorer does not show any disk, post a Disk mgmt screenshot using the instructions in

Denis - cannot do what you suggest as the Dell has once again died. I am going to try another reset - then I can post what you are asking for.
Most unusual for this to be required, if at all. What OS were you running in 2011?
Problem is, a lot of external devices came with autorun software (a popup as soon as it was connected) pre-added to the drive, giving the unsuspecting/inexperienced user the impression that installation was required.
Looking at the current WD web site, the whole range of software being required and offered is a grossly misleading crock.
It's quite possible that the software you thought you had to install was WD proprietary encryption and/or security software, hence the reason why it's no longer available (outdated) and the data can't be read. You might need to push WD for earlier (2011) software (often still available through (unlisted) FTP sites
