    windows new install

I went to the media creation site for windows 10 re-install. I received a file called, "support assist" Is this what I need to reinstall windows to my crashed Dell? Thanks

    Please see:
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

from the searchable Tutorial section- which illustrates how you create a bootable drive for installing Win 10.

Note: you should make sure your disk is ok if you can.
(I.e. what happened to cause a disastrous crash?)

And of course, if you have a suitable disk image, you can restore that, noting your other recent thread.

Well, I don't know if the disk is ok. I guess I have nothing to lose. Thanks.

You could boot from your Win 10 install disk to a command prompt and try this:
How to Check Drive Health and SMART Status in Windows 10

Or you could boot from a live boot disk and use the facilities on that to check the disk e.g. Crystal Diskinfo

Or you could put the drive in a caddy of some sort and check it on another PC...

Or you could hope Win 10 installs and then check the disk (Hard Disk Sentinel, Crystal Diskinfo)

*** remember that as per tutorial when you clean install Win 10 you must delete all partitions comprising the old O/S
    and install to unallocated space.

** Recommended - only have the system disk in place when you do the clean install.

I downloaded the windows install to my usb drive. Problem is, when I insert it into win10 pc, and hit f12, it does not go to that usb drive. When I have my macrium boot usb it goes there without a problem but does not see this usb. It does not seem to work with f12. Any others I can try to get to it?

I downloaded the windows install to my usb drive.
    Unsure what you mean.
Downloading an iso file to a USB disk simply means you are storing the iso file on the disk. It's not a bootable disk at all.

The media creation tool can be used to directly create a bootable disk- if you choose the right option.

    See the tutorial.

ok. I am on win7 desktop. I downloaded the windows media creation tool to my usb. So, I am going to run the tool on the usb on the win7 machine? I guess that's where I am getting confused. If I do that will it then save whatever it has created to that usb? I don't want to mess up my friend's pc with this stuff. Thanks.

    No.

Please Please follow the tutorial- and the tool's own simple instructions. This is not the hard bit.

    Bottom right:

Leaving the Use the recommended options for this PC box checked will have the Media Creation Tool create a USB flash drive that's the same language, edition, and architecture as the current PC.

I need some clarification about this bold part. I am creating this file on my friend's window 7 machine. It is only being created and then it will be saved to my usb device. All kind of confusing - sorry.

I can then take the usb to my now dead Dell and install it there, correct? I looked at the link you gave me but still have questions. As in the bold part. Thank you.

If you consider step 7 of the tutorial
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10
    windows new install-1.jpg

and read around that, you have all the options you need to create one appropriate to your PC.

For example, if the Win 7 machine is 32 bits and Portuguese, you probably don't want that. So you untick the recommended option and select the options appropriate to you - e.g. 64 bits and whatever language you prefer.

    Simple logic, really.

Run the tool under Win 7 with the intended boot disk plugged in.

Once you have created the bootable install disk, you remove it from the Win 7 PC, stick it in yours, and boot from it.

    Everything is covered in this:
    Clean Install Windows 10

again, from the searchable Tutorials section (and these two tutorials are in the selection presented when you click Tutorials at the top).

blue text in the tutorials is usually clickable and may take you to another tutorial, for example.
