In this guide, you will learn the steps to use the free version of Macrium Reflect 8 with the best settings to make automatic backups of a computer running Windows 10 or Windows 11.

It does not work like that (in most cases).

If usb drive is fat32 formatted, the boot files are copied to it and existing files are not deleted (unless drive is really full perhaps).

If drive is ntfs or exFat formatted with no fat32 partitions, the partition will be deleted and a new fat32 partition created.

However it is safer to assume other files may get lost so should be backed up.
Its Fat32, so i guess i shouldnt think about what i put on it as long as there is room ?

As Macrium told you [your post #6], it must also be MBR [see my post #9].

    All the best,

Here... I removed everything BUT making the rescue media.
The big box in the middle is the only really confusing part.
Whether to choose PE or RE. I chose PE cause I don't have a Recovery partition.
If you have one, you should be able to choose: RE

Step #1.5 is where you choose PE or RE

    1. In step #1.5 click the "show more arrow" on the far right.
    2. In step #2 you choose: what you're going to put the Rescue Media... ON. Like USB stick or CD.
    3. The rest should be self explanatory.

    Attachment 378474

In step #2... I highly recommend choosing either USB stick or CD.
Macrium will make either the USB stick or the CD bootable... automatically.
Just format the USB stick to FAT32, to make it acceptable to the Rescue Media Builder.

Choosing "boot menu" can come back to haunt you, if your... boot menu ever becomes corrupt,
or if your Windows drive ever dies.

If you need to convert the USB stick to MBR... here's how...

Convert GPT Disk to MBR Disk in Windows 10
I cant make any changes to 1.5 so i guess i have to make it RE ? Or is there something i can change to choose between RE or PE ?

step 2: Okay i'll choose USB, but its already FAT32 so why is it saying that GPT format is not supported ? Need Macrium help-fat32.jpg

i will check out your link with GPT to MBR

You'll have to re-initialise that USB stick as MBR instead of GPT.
    See
Somebody might also post instructions for doing it with Disk mgmt or using Diskpart commands.
    It's not a subject I know about.

    Denis
I will check out what you and Ghot posted with converting GPT to MBR, thanks.

Because Macrium does not support making its boot disk on a GPT disk.

why is it saying this ? It is recommended to only convert GPT to MBR for a data disk and not an OS disk to avoid potentially not being able to boot the OS afterwards.

I mean i dont really have a choice if thats the only way, but isnt Rescue Media a OS in a way ?

No. It's a bootable "program". It's a bootable version of Macrium Reflect.
When you buy a USB stick it's MBR.
If you want to keep that USB stick as GPT, that's fine. Just buy another USB stick for the Rescue media.

Okay but what about PE or RE in step 1.5 ? Since its on RE right now and i cant change that, should i just go with that ?

It doesn't matter. Both work... Quit fighting with Macrium. Go with the flow.

    USB Sticks ...for example.

I know, in most cases, you have to be very careful with new programs.
Macrium, however, is a "nice" program. It won't install bad things, and it's very helpful.
You can trust Macrium not to try to trick you.

It is saying this only for the Macrium rescue disk / boot disk.
Nothing else. It has nothing to do with booting Windows.

"Why"? Because they designed it with that limitation either by accident of design.
