    Hi zbook,

Thank you for taking the time and effort to look at my issue. it sounds like you are recommending a clean install in which case it will be a few days. In post #27 , i posted my dell preboot diagnostics, as far as I can tell I can only run the custom diagnostics via support assist which I cannot install successfully.

Reinstalling all my apps, means finding all my license files. I do have my macrium backup. Is this not a good option?

I would restore the Macrium Reflect backup image. That's the entire reason for making one.

See if you can run the dell pre-boot diagnostics:

    and you advise

however may I point out that the Macrium image will not see the drive to restore it to, as explained on earlier posts in the topic or indeed diskpart. Apparently there has been some progress in that regard - BUT
HOWEVER if I have read it correctly the Macrium image was made on ANOTHER computer not the one to which he is trying to restore it

Unless the OP has a reason not to, seems like this makes the most sense to me.

My preboot diagnostics pass (same as in post #27, even fan and thermals look the same).

My macrium image is from the broken laptop. Only the macrium usb RE was from a different laptop.

I'm hoping to use my macrium image to restore to a new ssd drive. At that time I'll disable raid. I was also hoping to put user data onto another partition but not sure how to do that using my macrium image. I know clean install can do that.

I apologise to you, there are so many posts in answer to so many questions, that it is difficult to sort out the important details
However I have now found the answer for you
A chkdsk log was asked for and the important detail on the results is
indows has scanned the file system and found no problems.
    No further action is required.

    476628525 KB total disk space.
    140992804 KB in 394550 files.
    262388 KB in 99562 indexes.
    88 KB in bad sectors.
961777 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
    334411468 KB available on disk.

Irrespective of whether the Macrium RE made on the different laptop would find the C lettered partition - on which to restore the image is rather irrelevant as with 88KB of bad sectors the chances of it restoring are slim.

As you say the Macrium RE or the recovery using WinPE is always best made on the computer on which it is going to be used and that is more important with MacriumRE, as the creation of the restore medium is made by scanning the computer for the necessary drivers etc.

As NavyLCDR has said you should be able to restore the Macrium Image to a new drive

and I see that Dalchina mentioned the possible drive problem quite early in the topic.

I am marking this thread solved. Here's my update and many thanks to all that contributed:

    SUMMARY:
I would boot in a loop forever and my usb rescue boot disks would not boot up enough to let macrium run
Removing the HDD allowed my rescue disks to boot and I could run macrium.
I bought an SSD and replaced my HDD and restored my macrium image.
sfc /scannow, dism /online /cleanup-image are both ok now.
i still have 88kb in bad sectors from chkdsk , I'm still working on it but consider that a separate issue.

    Thanks again to all.

To get rid of the bad sector record you run chkdsk with the b as here
/b Use with NTFS only. Clears the list of bad clusters on the volume and rescans all allocated and free clusters for errors. /b includes the functionality of /r. Use this parameter after imaging a volume to a new hard disk drive.

presuming of course that you refer to the bad sectors record trnaferred to the replacement drive from the image of the old HDD
