    Macrium Reflect laptop restore fails

    Hello,
This is my first post. thanks in advance for any help.
My problem is I made an image backup of my laptop and later did an image restore. No errors were indicated in the create or restore. However after the restore completed, the laptop would not boot. It went straight to bios setup.

Hi, what did you image initially? Did you image all partitions comprising your O/S- typically 4 for UEFI?
And which partitions did you restore?

Was your PC behaving normally before you performed the restoration, and if not, what was the reason for it?

It was a full system drive image.
We were having a problem seeing our comcast WIFI network. Comcast insisted it was a computer problem, which i did not believe. So I did a reformat and reinstall windows 10. WIFI issue remained. So I wanted to go back to the original installation since it is now clear there was not a computer problem.

Thanks- what I can't understand is why your PC would boot to BIOS options- rather than displaying a failure to boot to Windows.

Yeah, that is odd. It seems to me laptop makers do odd things compared to desktops. Maybe it is the way the bios is written.

Did you inadvertently switch from a UEFI/GPT bios configuration to a Legacy bios/MBR setup (or vice versa) when you did the clean install? If so, then the restore may have been successful, but won't boot until you configure the bios back to the way it was before.

    Hi Bree,
The ASUS Laptop came with Windows 10 installed. After I imaged the drive with Macrium I clean installed Windows using the ASUS recovery thump drive. When the fresh install did not correct the WIFI issue, I attempted to restore the original installation. That's when the system would not boot, and oddly went directly to setup. Then I installed windows again using the Asus recovery thumb drive. That is where I am now. Computer runs OK except WIFI problem still exists and all programs need to be reinstalled. I would still like to get the Macrium restore to work, instead of having to reinstall all programs. But to answer your question, at no time did I change anything in BIOS.

OK, so you have a clean install that boots, albeit without your installed software. You should be able to restore just the C: partition from your backup to replace the C: partition of this working system and because it has all the uefi boot partitions from the clean install it should still boot, but now to the original Windows from your backup with all your installed software.

This trick is typically used to restore a legacy MBR image to a UEFI machine (or vice versa), as in these examples.

Converting MBR to GPT for EFI boot?

GPT to MBR scheme using Macrium Reflect Free

Macrium Reflect recovery drive has an option to “Fix Windows boot problems”. Boot form the recovery drive and click on the Restore tab. There you will find the option to to fix Windows boot problems. Give it a try and see if it helps.
