welp, this hard drive is fubar.
Can't create a system image in any program because certain LBAs cause every backup software to hang and fail.
So the next best option is to just migrate user data.
Will Chrome browser data and cookies be transferred properly?
Last time I tried copying the user folder, browser history data etc were not copied properly.
You can determine the state of your drive without writing anything to it by using a portable program e.g.
Download HD Tune v2.55 (freeware) - AfterDawn: Software downloads
Health and Error Scan tabs.
If the drive happens to test ok then you could try chkdsk from an admin command or Powershell prompt and see if anything can be improved.
You may be reduced to attempting to recover individual or small groups of files if you have no other backup.
For the future:
Note that the state of disks can be monitored and an alert generated if their state deteriorates using e.g. Crystal Diskinfo (free), giving you early warning.
The routine and regular use of disk imaging provides just the backup you would need now for a relatively painless recovery. But the very act of imaging also verifies the integrity of the used part of the disk- as you have discovered. That is of value if you're not otherwise alerted as you can then investigate further, knowing you have an earlier image available.
Files can be copied from a mounted disk image file, which then also acts as a full backup.
To answer your question on Chrome. If you have saved passwords, bookmarks etc, sign into chrome with your gmail address. If you don't have one its free you can get one. It will then move the following to the cloud and sync with Chrome when you sign in again.
I just use the high level switch and sync everything.
