How I can get my data back after recovery

I've re-installed OS using HP cloud recovery tool as per instruction given by HP here - https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06162205

After doing this I figured out that I lost data which I kept as backup in different Drive. Note that my Laptop had drive C: with 100GB for windows and drive D: with rest storage for data backup. I thought only C: drive would be impacted. But HP recovery process actually deleted the whole 240GB SSD and re-partition it.
My question is how can I get the backup files back?

I guess there's some chance you can recover, but I wouldn't have high hopes since your partitions have apparently been overwritten.

You would likely need to concentrate on recovering the original partition, rather than the files per se. If you can recover the partition, the files may be there.

The resident expert on this stuff is Jumanji. I think he is in India. Hope he sees your post and can recommend the right tool. I'd guess he will ask you to download Minitool Partition Wizard, but wait for his instructions.

Until @jumanji comes along, best not to use the PC else you may reduce the chances of recovery.

Even before ignatzatsonic and Bree came in here, I had seen The OP's post and thought it isn't going to be a cakewalk. Some investigative work has to be done. I shall return after I crystalise my plans on it.

    @
sam781 , its going to be a long drawn process.

    1. How many partitions were there in that disk before it was overwritten with the new partitions?

    2. What is the nature of data in it ? Tell the file formats .jpg, .mp3 .doc etc.,

    3. Please post a full screenshot of Windows Disk Management. Please read and adhere to the guidelines here
Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image - Windows 7 Help Forums

No need to be in a hurry. Take your time. Because I also need time to crystalise my plans . One saving grace is that you are almost in the same timezone.

    1. May not be 100% correct. Syetem reserved (500MB), some unlocated space (few MB/GB), C: drive (100GB), D: drive (approx 133GB), some unalocated free spaces
    2. D: drive had backup date. hi priority data is .jpg files

    Hi sam781

My fault - I had assumed that you had a secondary internal disk exclusively for data. Then I saw that you have a laptop and the D drive you had mentioned is in the system disk itself.

Now looking at the info and Windows Disk Management you had posted all hopes dashed to the ground. You had used the system created D: Recovery drive
( OEM Partition) for storing the personal data

Earlier as per your statement your C: drive was 100GB. But now it had been increased by another 124GB. That means you have already lost 123 GB of data from your Original D: Recovery (OEM Partition)

The present condition is that if at all any data is left that should be in the last 11GB of D:. Hmmm... this applies to HDDs only.

If your System drive is an SSD then the above mentioned reasoning does not apply since SSDs use "Wear levelling Technology " that writes data in dfferent parts of the drive. That makes the situation worse.

All in all I would think there is absolutely no chance of recovering any data. Sorry for that.

    Jumanji
Thanks a lot for your conclusive feedback.
I was thinking about recovery application which can restore partition. Free testdisk may also have such. Is it possible to restore partition using such partition recovery application in my case?

    @sam781

Now the situation is that you can try whatever you want.

My original plan was to delete the volume D: and then try Partition Recovery Wizard and check whether it could find the backup of the Original volume boot record. I had elaborate plans on doing that. But when I came to know that it is an SSD and in all probability it is a GPT drive (where the backup exists at the very end of the disk), I gave it up .(In case of a GPT drive the original back up of the D: drive's volume boot record would have been overwritten with the backup of the new VBR of the present D: drive.)

You can still try MiniTool Partiiton Wizard version 9. Download the bootable ISO , write it on an empty pen drive and boot from it. Bootable Partition Manger | MiniTool Partition Wizard Bootable Edition ( Thanks to @Bree for the Waybackmachine)

Post a screenshot of how your disk looks like in it ( the very first screen when you launch it). Run the Partition Recovery Wizard and post a screenshot of the Partitions found Window. Let us see what it shows and whether there is any light at the end of the tunnel.

    You're welcome

When you have downloaded the ISO, Option Four in this tutorial can be used to make a bootable usb from it.

Have you read all of this? https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04758961

There may possibly be a hidden(?) partition - recovery
