    Is this real?

My wife got this message popup today while looking at recipe site. Windows Defender did not find anything. I called the number just for a chance to to insult some SOB on the other end.

Later I got to thinking this can't possibly be a real Microsoft message, can it?

    "800-274-4330" - Google Search

above is a list of Google hits for that 800 number. I don't see any indication that number is a Microsoft number.

Nor can I recall ever seeing an onscreen message asking me to call Microsoft.

The fact that a phone number is provided is a sure sign the popup is a fake. Real messages from Windows Defender never do this. Microsoft does not reach out to provide unsolicited tech support by telephone or any other means.

Microsoft has warned about this kind of thing for a long time. See this for more information:

MS will never contact you concerning a virus or give you a call about an infected computer.

Also be aware that calls stating "your Windows license is about to expire" are also scams

    Agree, agree, agree!!!!!

One other little give-away.... it is highly unlikely they (MS) would use "+1" (US country code) in a legit number.
