I have used Comodo internet security in the past and never had issues with it , but have heard that windows 10 doesn't need any av protection so a little confused
If you add the word "additional", to your statement, to make it "Windows 10 does not need any additional AV", then that would match the thoughts of a lot of experienced users. with the improvements in recent router firewalls, and as long as you surf the net safely, and keep the built in Defender up to date,. then you should not have any serious issues with malware on Windows 10.

I am currently using Bitdefender Total Security 2017, because my work can sometimes take me following links that lead down some nasty rabbit holes

For a free protection I would recommend Windows Defender and common sense.

Absolutely agree! I've "cleaned" 3 or 4 computers for friends heavily infected with malware and they were always running two or three different anti-spyware, anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-everything programs which I usually had to uninstall just to clean up their problems. My own computers - nothing but Windows Defender and common sense and I get a minor malware infection on 1 computer out of 12 on my home network about once per year and it is always cleaned up by a simple hard drive cleaning and removing all temporary files.
