They don't seem to be very forthcoming as to why they're in such a rush to push out MB3 and stop supporting previous versions. In my limited experience, when a company hides things from its customers it usually means (1) they're ashamed of something; (2) they're afraid of something; or (3) they're trying to manipulate something. I guess time will tell if Malwarebytes falls into any of those categories.

If past history is a guide, I expect that the "what" ("Malwarebytes 3") will eventually stabilize and will be a good program.
Until we see objective testing and data from the real-world, however, we will not know if it really can be both an "AV replacement" (with protection that "surpasses" traditional AVs) and a souped-up anti-malware program to run side-by-side with a real, full AV.
I hope we customers will not be forced to choose between Malwarebytes and a full security suite from another vendor.

The "when" and the "how", unprecedented as they are both for the company and for (security) software in general, are more worrisome.

Let's hope that the "why" does not turn out to be one of those three reasons.

    Hi MoxieMomma,

I was shocked to see that the company has summarily removed nearly all of their helpful user guides and KB articles for MBAM2. THIS and a tiny handful of KB articles are all I can find. It took some digging. The rest is GONE. Poof!
The installer for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.2.1.1043 can be obtained using the download link referenced in the following article: https://support.malwarebytes.com/cus...5314?b_id=6438

Malwarebytes 2.2.1.1043 support articles and videos can all be found within the Consumer Support page.
    https://support.malwarebytes.com/?b_id=6438

    malwarebytes.com > Support > Consumer > Anti-Malware 2.x

    Can anyone clarify this, please?
If you are currently using the Trial version of Malwarebytes 3.x and wish to immediately revert to the Free version, the following steps can be taken:
    • Click the Settings menu.
    • Click My Account.
    • Click Deactivate Premium Trial.

This is explained in the My Account section of the Malwarebytes 3.x User Guide linked below.

    Thanks for your post.

For the record: "Deactivate" account is not the same thing as "End Trial".

"Deactivate" is used by Premium users prior to a clean R&R, or if they wish to transfer a license from 1 PC to another.
Yes, it is supposed to revert the program to Free on that computer, if it works as intended.

"End Trial" is used by Trial users who are in the midst of the 14-day Trial and who do not wish either to activate the program to "Premium" with a paid license, or to wait out the 14 days for the program to automatically revert to Free.

In the past there were "End Trial" links both in the main GUI AND in a system tray popup notifying the user that the Trial was ending or expired. Clicking either of those links would revert the Trial version to Free.

If what @Cliff S reports is true, they have removed both of those links.
If what @chrismine reports is true, they may not have removed them. But the screen shot posted does not clarify that, unfortunately. (We would need to see a screenshot of the GUI or of a system tray popup from a system running the Trial version that shows the "End Trial" button/link.)

    Can anyone clarify this, please?

    Cheers,
    MM

(P.S. One could also let the Trial run out or perform a clean R&R in order to get back to the Free version. The latter worked because the policy was 1 Trial per PC per major program version. AFAIK that is still the case and these may now be the only two ways to get the Trial to revert to Free.)

That is good to know, but it is a bit hard (impossible?) to find for new support site visitors or those who do not have that URL bookmarked.
I respectfully suggest making it easier to find.
The navigation on a similar site for Kaspersky, for example, is much clearer and much more intuitive.

Also, you are providing a direct link.
I tried to get there from the main company page (malwarebytes.com) > "support".
That is how a newcomer or casual visitor might get there.

It takes me here, which consists primarily of Version 3 info and a handful of MBAM2 articles/videos:
    https://support.malwarebytes.com/?b_id=6400

    See screen shot.

Yes, with some digging yesterday, I was able to locate the legacy PDF version of the user guide and a SMALL handful of the support articles/videos (see screen shot).

Despite many years of working with the Support Portal, however, I could not locate the original "mother lode" of MBAM2 support topics yesterday. There was only a short list of articles and no HTML version of the UG.
The navigation to this link is either not there (it is essentially an "orphan link") or it is not intuitive enough.

In any event, I am glad that the extensive content is still there,.
I respectfully suggest, however, that it needs to be easier to find by those unfamiliar with the site and those who do not know the unique URL to the old support portal.

Thank you for the correction and clarification.
I do not have a test box or VM on which to load version 3.
    But I stand corrected.

One of the members here may have mistakenly concluded that the "End Trial" option had been removed.
To clarify, however, the system tray popup notification of an expiring/expired Trial has been removed?
So, the only direct way now is to click the link/button in the GUI?
(And the indirect means of an R&R or just letting the Trial run out still work, as well.)

Thank you for taking the time to clarify these issues.
I'm sure the version 3 UG is great.
But until there are focused, topic-specific KB articles and a more stable UI/UX for the program itself, there will be many questions, especially for users who are not "early adopters" and who want to learn more but who lack a VM or test box for experimentation.

    Thanks,
    MM

I don't believe the support articles for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.2.1.1043 are hidden away.

Upon visiting the Consumer Support Page directly from the Malwarebytes.com homepage, "Support for past releases" is clearly labelled below the Malwarebytes 3.0 content. If you scroll down just a little more (in reference to your screenshot), you will see, "Browse by product" where "Anti-Malware 2.x" is the second item in the list. This is where the following link is featured.

I take your point regarding the prominence of the Malwarebytes 2.2.1.1043 download link. This is something that can be looked into.

To clarify, however, the system tray popup notification of an expiring/expired Trial has been removed?
Users will receive two types of notifications concerning their Trial version - a notification five days before expiration of the Trial and a notification after expiration of the Trial. Please refer to the screenshots below.

When I turn it off.......Everything is off ..... Its just that simple.
Actually, no I do understand what you are trying to do.
I merely point out that the whole point of "real-time protection" to help prevent infection is.....
.....to have it running in real-time.

Turning it OFF disables that real-time protection.
When it is OFF, it does not protect.
It is only a manual scanner to help remove existing infection.

No one can predict when s/he will be infected, e.g. by exploits, drive-by attacks, etc.
Even savvy and advanced users can be hit on "legit" sites, by an inadvertent mis-click, and by a host of other means, with ransomware and other (crypto)threats, before they know it.
By the time one "notices" and turns on the protection, it's too late.
(We see this all too often in malware removal fora.)

If there is some sort of conflict with other real-time applications, then that's something that needs to be addressed.
But I don't see a credible rationale for turning OFF real-time protection.
(If, for some odd reason, it were ever necessary, then doing so from the system tray icon or GUI -- as the product is designed -- makes infinitely more sense to me than does fiddling in services.msc and potentially breaking something.)

So, I understand the WHAT. I don't understand the WHY.
But I don't care to argue.
It's absolutely up to you how to use programs on your computer.

    Cheers,
    MM

    Interesting.
If I somehow missed that the other day, I apologize and stand corrected. I'm pretty sure I scrolled down on the page, but...
If, on the other hand, the support page has been <ahem> "tweaked" in the past few days to restore an icon/link to the full MBAM2 support portal and resources, then that's OK, too.

I take your point regarding the prominence of the Malwarebytes 2.2.1.1043 download link. This is something that can be looked into.
    Thank you.
MBAM2 has 6 months to live.
Please don't turn off the life-support just yet.

Users will receive two types of notifications concerning their Trial version - a notification five days before expiration of the Trial and a notification after expiration of the Trial.
So the "End Free Trial" link in the system tray popup appears to have been removed.
As long as there is a way to directly end it from the "My Account" tab in the GUI, that's OK.
There was a misunderstanding that the user either had to UPGRADE to paid version, let the Trial expire, or R&R.
That would have been overly aggressive.

Thanks for the time, consideration and clarification,
    MM

    No arguement intended MM
I'll try one more time to explain
If you turn off MB3 from the tray icon, it only turns off MB3 showing to the user, its STILL running.
So IF their was a conflict with some program updating and during the update needs to reboot to finish the process, MB3 is running, is never off. ( like say a Windows update) The way I have it setup, on any reboot MB3 is automatically turned off, until I turn it on. No MB3 Service is running. Once any update is finished, I turn MB3 back on, with just one click of the mouse. Runs just fine for me, I have no problems. This is just to make sure MB3 does not interfere with any program or Windows update, during a reboot process.
This DOES NOT Break anything or cause ANY problems with MB3, or any other program.
At this point in time, I still believe there are a few bugs in the way MB3 runs, and I prefer to run it manually under MY Full Control.
MB3 runs on my computer all the time, its hardy ever off MM, only time its off, is during a reboot, unless I turn it off manually. I also turn this computer off every night, as I don't let it run 24/7 Soon as I turn computer on, I turn MB3 on in the morning. I did explain this earlier too. When after more updates are released, and MB3 has less issues, or I feel more trusting of MB, I'll change on how I let it run on this computer. Mike....

^^ That's fine with me. EOD on that subject for me. ^^

    ----------------
@LiquidTension, since you have been so kind and helpful, perhaps we can pick your brain a bit further?

Could you please provide information on the following "burning" questions:
    1. Why was a BETA4** (only the 2nd or third public beta?) shipped as a RELEASE build with so very many known, unresolved issues so soon after beta testing began?
      1. We all understand the "lather-rinse-repeat" cycle of software publishing, but the public beta period for this entirely new product lasted only a few weeks and only 2 betas.
      2. This was unprecedented for other major program versions.
      3. The sheer flood of trouble reports at the product forum (posts, not just topics) shows that it was highly unstable, costing customers frustration/time/effort and overwhelming staff members trying to keep up with providing advice and support.
      4. What's done is done, but it does not seem to have been a good decision.

    2. Why were neither the mbam-clean nor the mbam-check utility updated for the new program before it was released?.
      1. Proper versions of those tools for the new program would probably be very helpful, as in the past, especially given version 3's instability, upgrading issues, etc.

    3. What does "AV Replacement" really mean?
      1. MB3 adds Anti-Exploit and Anti-Ransomware capability, but it is still not a true AV, and it lacks HIPS and firewall protection.
      2. If it is not a full anti-virus or full security suite, how can it provide sufficient SOLE protection, as it is being marketed?
      3. If it is robust enough to run as an "AV replacement", how can it ALSO be a robust anti-malware/exploit/ransomware product that can STILL run side-by-with a real AV without conflicts, as it is also being marketed?

    4. Can you point us to external, public data to bolster the assertion that MB3 "surpasses" other, traditional AVs?
      1. Everyone is excited to learn about the new product, and some of us might be willing to let go of our current AV/ISS.
      2. But we have not yet seen significant, outside data about it.
      3. Will Malwarebytes accept the results of AV comparatives and other outside testing in which this "AV Replacement" is compared head-to-head with established, true AVs?
        1. The old (justifiable) explanation that "MBAM is not an anti-virus" seems no longer to apply to MB3.

    5. Why is the stable, flagship product, MBAM2, being forced to EOS/EOL after only ~6 months?
      1. This compressed life-cycle is unprecedented for Malwarebytes and for any other major security product and it seems unnecessarily rushed.

Thank you again very much for your time, consideration and expertise.

    MM

**Edited just now to correct the beta build number. I'm told it was beta4, not beta3 that shipped as the release version.
