Have I been infested by some malware called "Kies 4.3.22053.2" ?

    Hello

According to CCleaner (Free), I still have a copy of "Kies 4.3.22053.2" that needs to be updated.

I have not used Samsung Kies for at least a year and I don't want it. But I couldn't find it anywhere on my PC.
Even 'Everything' (full local file search by voidtools) found nothing.
So I installed the latest copy of Kies and then immediately uninstalled it using RevoUninstall (v2.3.8), which I got to search for leftovers, all of which I got it to delete.

But having then rebooted my PC, guess what? Ccleaner STILL says that I have a copy of "Kies 4.3.22053.2" that needs to be updated! But Everything (voidtools) still can't find any files with "KIES" in their names (except various references to "cookies"!)

Have I been infested by some malware called "Kies 4.3.22053.2" ?

    Any suggestions?

Please post a screenshot of the CCleaner notification. Is this the PC Optimizer section ?

How to Upload and Post Screenshots and Files at Ten Forums

Personal opinion, but I am leery of the CCleaner PC Optimizer and Driver Updater. May be false notification, may not ?

After running REVO, also manually check your registry and Program Files, Data Files and User Files on the C drive for remnants of Kies.

If 'Kies' doesn't refer to one or more files then search the registry using, for example, Nir Sofer's RegScanner.

    Hope this helps...

Nope, it is the Healthcheck section of CCleaner. From bitter experience, I now never use third party optimizers or driver updaters.

I have used Everything (voidtools) to remove all files that have KIES in the name.
It sounds like some garbage has been left behind in the windows Registry, however I don't trust myself to do anything with the Registry!

I tried the method of using Windowskey+R to run:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallShield Installation Information\{88547073-C566-4895-9005-EBE98EA3F7C7}\setup.exe" -runfromtemp -l0x0409 -removeonly"
    But that failed.

Damned Samsung. How dare they write software that is so invasive and so hard to remove?

Create System Restore Point in Windows 10

If you don't want to manually clean the register. try setting a System Restore point back to the date before KIES was installed.

. I do not know how far you can go back to set a System Restore point.

Did you try REVO unnistaller as mentioned in post #2 ?

May also want to google for other methods. Sounds like you download other programs and then delete. Also, consider a System Reset.

No, that version of KIES was originally installed many years ago.

Yes, I did try REVO Uninstaller. It's my default application for removing applications.

A from memory a System Reset would uninstall ALL of my applications, no?
(Sorry that's not an option to resolve this - what appears to be - just minor irritation... unless of course it's actually malware)

    @ship69

It isn't malware. Rather, remnants of a long ago installed program.

Despite what is so often touted, Revo Uninstaller is not always the magic bullet, in a situation such as this.

Personally, I would not worry further about it.

It's my experience that CCleaner is not entirely honest about 'problems' it finds. It's just a come-on to get you to buy the full version.

As an experiment, I clicked the CC driver updater button and CCleaner found 20 out of date drivers. To update, I had to either buy the full program or start a 7 day trial - I chose the latter.

I clicked update again, and after a brief scan CC said 'no updates required'. It was a con.

I reverted my system to a Macrium image I'd taken before this experiment - so no harm done.
