Firewall missing and numerous other issues.

Hello I am hoping for some help. I dont know what happened to my laptop and I could really use help fixing it without haveing to take it in to the computer shop or losing everything.

So I hadnt used my computer in a while but I left it on so something happened.

I can follow instructions pretty well and the first thing I noticed it the windows firewall is gone.

other problems are My microsoft store is missing
I cant open task manager (its grayed out)
when I first reboot the computer the registry editior pops up.

so everything I have read on the MS site suggests creating a media installation. her is the problem I have the program installed and go through al the prompts and it never installs the software to my USB drive. I have waited hours and nothing. So I am at a total loss.

I got the laptop from my mom so she never made any kind of backup. I really hope someone can help me fix this without losing my info. I have also ran antivirus and nothing came up.

Hi, it sounds as if that Windows installation is significantly damaged- perhaps it's not capable even of downloading anything.

Do you have access to another PC? A friend's?

What do you want to do?
- recover data from the disk?
- clean install Win 10 on it (by far the simplest thing to do)?

In your situation, with one PC in a questionable state and with no (software) tools ready to hand, I would use another computer to create a live boot disk with tools to use to check what's on the disk, and hopefully enable you to access the internet.

If you can boot that laptop from the live boot disk, you will have a working Win 10, independent of what's on the disk.

Then you can
- check the disk in the laptop (it could be failing)
- recover data

Use one of the links here to download an iso file:
To build Kyhi’s Rescue Disk you need only download the ISO file (comes in x86/32-bit and x64/64-bit flavors at present).

Then use the instructions here to create a bootable flash disk from it:

e.g. Option 2 - using that iso file.

Hello thanks for the fast response. I would like to save my info unless I can find an external drive that I can move my files. If at possible I would like to do a repair if not I wil start copying the programs I have to re add back. it would also be easier to reset it since the laptop has my mothers info. I am mainly worried about my files and programs like MS office.

I have access to my old laptop that was repaired its running windows 7 and i have a 128gb flash drive to do this. I will reread the steps you have me. I am able to download and run some programs still so the laptop is still functioning.

EDIT I went to that link and when i click the 64bit I need the link is 404. So I am unable to proceed to the next step.

Right now I am on the other laptop so I think I have everything I need.

A quick fix may be to goto https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/soft...load/windows10 hit update now you wont loose any data or software but upgrade to 1909

thank you I will try to do the update first but as a backup I got the media creation usb created from the other laptop if i need it. will report back once I do the update. cannot thank you enough

okay some reason it wont let me edit my prev post but after 3 hours i got it to update but it didnt fix anything, so now im at a loss. i have started writing the programs down i have but is there a way to just repair windows?

i did get the media creation usb to finish from another computer so i haave that.

Before making any changes to your existing PC you should make a backup.

tenforums members tirelessly recommend the routine use of disk imaging- Macrium Reflect (free-paid). Given a Windows disk image you can restore a broken installation to a good previous state without struggling and days of technical help. Please consider doing this now to consolidate what you have.

You will need a large external disk e.g. 1Tb.

Now- we have no idea whatsoever what state your PC is in. The disk could well be faulty, in which case trying to fix it is a complete waste of time.

So the first thing to do is to check your disk.

Now the PC is bootable, so I suggest you run this portable program.
Download Portable HD Tune 2.55

You can put this on a flash drive and run it from there- no installation.

Use the Health and Error scan tabs, and report what it finds.

Update i dont have a drive right now available to do the back up but i cooied the important stuff

I used the hd tune scanned everything and there werent any errors or hard drive problems. (Thank heavens for small miracles)

What should be my next step?

Next two checks:
From an admin command or Powershell prompt run
chkdsk c: /scan
then if ok run
sfc /scannow

and report the summary result.

Note: without a backup you are always at risk of losing data. If you are in a situation where you need to recover data the first thing you do is stop writing to the partition in question.

Routine disk imaging to a large external disk (£40-50 perhaps) is most strongly recommended. The act of imaging is also a check on the integrity of your data.

That's encouraging, but begs the question as to what sort of corruption could possibly have occurred and why.

You reported a variety of problems, and your build is 1903.
So I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install of that build.

Search (Google e.g.) for Heidoc iso downloader
Download and run it and use it to download a 1903 iso of the same 'bitness' e.g 64 bits if yours is 64.

Make sure you have at least 35Gb free on C:

To perform an in-place u. repair:
rt click the iso, click Mount
open the new drive letter created in file explorer
double click setup.exe
