    UAC makes my computer worthless

Hi Everybody and Good Afternoon -
Sorry to be whining on my first post on 10Forums, but I am at my wits end this afternoon.
I'm Greenbait44, an active retired old guy. I owned a construction/development company for nearly 40 years and made myself learn to make use of computers back in the day when computing for business was just a child.

Right now I am running WIN10 Version 1903 on an ASUS R510L laptop. I've been downloading Windows Updates regularly each time a new Version was published. Until last week I'd been quite satisfied with WIN10 until this User Account Control took over. UAC blocks my every attempt to use apps to tweak my computer's behavior.

I'm aware that UAC is integral to the Windows security software made by JAM Software GBH. And that we plebes are not permitted to adjust its internal settings. But since UAC showed up my old Administrator password won't work thereby negating any UAC sign-ins. And for some reason, my User Account has been changed so that now, command prompts are useless. UAC even blocks my attempts to remove and re download with a fresh version of Windows.

OK, that's enough. How in the world can I just start over with new Windows passwords where needed and the ability to my critical repairs my User Account. Maybe when I download Version 1909, that make me well again, computer-wise?

Thanks for youalls' endurance here as I rambled on. I look forward to making more positive contributions to this forum!

    Hello Greenbait44,

It sounds like this may be an issue with the password of your administrator account instead of UAC.

Are you able to sign in to Windows 10 with your administrator account?

Are you able to click/tap on Yes in the UAC prompt to approve while signed in to Windows 10 with an administrator account?

Do you even have a Yes button in UAC? If not....

If you get an Admin prompt in which the Yes button is greyed out or missing & which does not show a password entry box, Windows cannot find an admin user account that could grant permission to proceed so your only admin user account has either

    • suffered from user profile corruption making it no longer fully functional, or
    • been demoted to being a standard user account.

You might see if you may be able to reset your administrator account's password to see how UAC works for you afterwards.

And why have you referred to JAM Software GmbH?

Om'gosh, what a wonderful explanation and guidelines you just sent in response to my plea for help! I have skimmed through everything and I understand the list of steps and how you have identified my issue. I shall start fresh in the morning free of anxiety and panic, to follow through and get back to where I need to be.
    Thanks ever so much.

Well, curses! The omnipresent UAC will not let me proceed with the recovery steps provided by 10 Forums... I need the Administrator password to do that.

After a night's worth of searching and researching for an Admin PW, and to make a long story short, there is a "serious fault" in my Win10 app as described by Brink. Absolutely no chance of updating my Windows log-in file. So I am in the process of installing a fresh version of Win10.

In the new version I'll be able to set up my User password as well as my Administrator Password. If all goes well I should be able to get by UAC and begin to make use of my computer again. So my immediate issue is solved. I am so impressed by 10 Forums and by the people who make this forum work. Many thanks.

    Greenbait,

Please confirm that your problem is that the 'admin prompt' is stopping you because its Yes button is greyed out. If this is indeed the case then, as previously referred to by Bree, TenForums has a procedure for dealing with that.

I hope you gave up for the day instead of starting your fresh install. Using the procedure for fixing the greyed out Yes button is a lot quicker than an installation and leaves you with hardly any clearing up to do afterwards.

    Greenbait,

I have posted your 'visitor' message here in the thread instead than we can all take account of it -
Thx Try3 for sending the procedure to fix my UAC problem. Brink had sent the same procedure earlier. I hit a dead-end because I have no way to activate an Administrator position in my present situation. On my previous try I got as far as Safe Mode, then died there. In Safe Mode I saw no mention of "Administrator" on the startup screen so I assumed that I was at the point of a Fresh Start.
In addition to the inability to sign in as Administrator, I discovered I second critical condition: when I go to use the Command Prompt the screen is referencing an unused User account, i.e C:\Users\xxx instead of C:\Users\Mike. So I am unable to have any resourceful dialogue.
I'm really in a frustrating situation here, so I became convinced of using Fresh Start. In the meantime I downloaded the November 19 Update to 1909, Build 18363.476.
However as I attempted to process a Fresh Start I was blocked right away by my inability to sign in as Administrator. Now I must ask the Forum if there is a way to use Fresh Start in the absence of an Administrator login.
BTW Try3, in answer to your question about why I referenced JAM Software in my initial message: I saw that it was JAM who created the security software for Microsoft. I tried to go into the JAM app to disable UAC but quickly discovered that I was in way above my pay grade.
    Thanks
    And do please add -
1 Please confirm that your problem is that the 'admin prompt' is stopping you because its Yes button is greyed out.
2 If #1 is confirmed, at which step of the Fix UAC prompt has greyed out or missing Yes button - TenForumsTutorials procedure are you being stopped? What is happening / failing to happen?

Please note that Bree & I both posted a link to this extraordinarily well-written procedure whilst Brink posted a link to a completely different procedure.

I have no idea what you are referring to when you write "I tried to go into the JAM app". What Jam app?
