Well said mate. I agree totally. Learning to use PC' s can be difficult and it can be easy to get muddled up. We've all been there!! lol. Im always learning something else that I didn't know just by regularly using Tenforums. Sometimes when we try to help someone on here..thats easy to forget. This site is excellent though. Its full of helpful people who are always at hand when you're stuck and badly need some assistance.
ImLost, we haven't heard from you for a week.
--- Please consider having your laptop reset by a local computer shop.
If the computer shop recommends a clean install instead, have it done.
--- Have the computer shop provide you with the USB install drive.
The following recommendations are not mandatory however they are equivalent to keep your laptop as "well recoverable as possible"
Create a system image backup.
--- If I remember correctly, you were using a USB flash drive. Preferably use an external HDD.
--- Why? Because you can also save your data separately on that same external HDD.
--- However at least save your data on a separate USB flash drive if you prefer it that way.
Create a bootable USB Recovery drive:

Then there's security that's equivalent to keeping your home safe.
--- Make sure your security package protects your laptop.
--- Per your concern, consider Windows Defender.
--- In addition use Malwarebytes Free: I run mine once a month during the week before the 2nd Tuesday of the month.
Another monthly maintenance item you can do during the week before the 2nd Tuesday of the month is run CCleaner
--- Make sure you do not clean the registry.
Keep track of your Windows Updates versions
You can create a desktop shortcut to quickly check them
--- right click on your desktop
--- click on "New"
--- click on "Shortcut"
--- enter winver for the location
--- type any name you want
--- click on Finish.
--- The winver icon shortcut will look like this and it will also include the name you created for it
Let us know your version
My winver shortcut produces the following
--- Reports I have (OS Build 18362.418)
With all of that said, it may appear to be daunting & will cost a few dollars but it will set the stage for your laptop and its performance to last as long as possible.
--- Make an appointment 6 months from when the computer and/or you are completed to have it checked for a tune-up
--- Much less expensive than all of the above.
--- Then follow up with an annual tune-up.
The idea is to keep up your laptop as well as your car.
--- On the expense, it usually costs quite a bit when a car needs a new part compared to an annual tune-up on a laptop.

Not sure if computers really need to be taken into a shop for a tune-up, learn to do it yourself, lots of credible advice here and elsewhere. And instead of a yearly tune-up just do regular maintenance, your computer will thank you.
We've got to take into consideration the OP's capabilities. Not all users are handy of what we consider to be normal.

I tried to do option one to enable pua, but after I click the 'save as', I don't get "in the column on the left, click on desktop", like you show in #18, I get a big 'save as' window.
I'm at a meeting tonight so I can't double check this but it sounds like you are doing the right thing. If you are at the point I think you are at you might have to scroll up to locate the Desktop icon in the left pane.
The following screen provides the title of reg file: you don't have to change anything and I believe you can then check Save at the bottom of that screen so the reg icon appears on your desktop.
ok, I looked 'wrong', I now see where it says 'desktop' (within that window). but now you say things different from #18.
when I clk dsktp, the "save as" window stays. the box next to "save as type" says...."registration entries", and below it I can click on the "save" box...….but in #18, you say to click on the upper arrow/save as....same as in the previous black download box again.
so...….is this right: I click the dload button/then the arrow up to click "save as"......then the big "save as" window comes up. it has "desktop" listed inside at top left.....I click on that "desktop"......then I click on "save" in that window (below where it says "save as type" - "registration entries"?...…

9. You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

After you click on Save As, follow Step 5.

--- Do not touch the File name or the Save as type.
At the bottom of this screen, click Save which is next to Cancel.
Clicking on Save gives me
Don’t touch any of those options. because you will be moving on to step 6 per the tutorial.
Close the tutorial. On your desktop you will see the reg file icon: mine doesn’t show the full title and yours probably won’t either but I expanded it so you can tell this is the correct icon to work with.
6. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.
--- Follow through.
7. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

--- If you see a pop-up that reads Unknown publisher, click on Run.
--- On the UAC screen, answer Yes.
