    Asus laptop

Windows 10. Kid playing a game and put on some sort of “injector”. Then it went haywire. Now when starting laptop Asus appears with the twirling timing thing with dots, like trying to start. Don’t see a way of booting into safe mode as it doesn’t get that far. Laptop a year old. He said was a virus. I think the injector was a type of script. Anyone know what to do? Unit was my deceased wife’s. Was no software found when I retrieved laptop. Thx DM

See if you can system restore Windows 10 from Windows Recovery Environment.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below command into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

Following command will fixes errors on the disk and locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

    Code:
    Chkdsk D: /r

Please replace partition letter D: with Windows installed partition letter. When computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assign any other drive letter usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command can be use to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

The laptop startup doesn’t get that far. Unless the media is on a theme drive and the system recognizes the usb (which I have never gone into bios settings to make any changes for this), then I’m unsure of what you’re asking. I push the on button, Asus appears with the twirling dot circle and that is it. It is as if the bios is messed up

You can create a Windows Installation DVD/usb stick following the advice here:

I read and on Asus, you have to hit the F9 key several times at the Asus logo screen. I’ll try this when I get home.
Another suggests creating a dvd for usb. Again, I doubt the priority is correct and probably won’t even see the thumb drive. I’ll have a look

Got into repair window, went to advanced and hit “reset” as to wipe hard drive clean. Now shows restring this PC. Been at 1% for 30 min. Will let it run while at work. Hopefully will not be at 1% when I get home. I did see the option to use a usb drive in this repair screen so possibly another option if this doesn’t work. I may have to create a thumb drive that can do a scan for viruses from this screen. I’ll assume malware bites or someone has this available if I look for it.

It seems to be all better. Thank you!

I think you must hit ESC key quickly for some ASUS laptops to invoke boot option menu.
