    @midgo,

I don't know if you have already found the solution to your issue. If not, you can try the following:

-Perform a chkdsk /scan which is safer to run on SSD than chkdsk C: /f or /r. When completed, run the sfc /scannow again to see if that has made any difference.

-For the steps in the following tutorial, most of which you have already gone through, you can have another go at them after the previous step. Most specifically the one regarding the security descriptors.

Quickly Fix – SFC Scannow Not Working (Focus on 2 Cases)

-Lastly, if still no joy after that, I would take a look at a clean boot in order to find the culprit not playing nice with sfc /scannow. As I mentioned before something ( a corrupt driver, an App or a process etc...) could be at play here. It would not hurt either to run a full virus scan with MS Defender.

Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

    Really hope that finally helps.

    Cheers!
Thanks for you ongoing interest and suggestions.
Yes I have tried the methods you refer to above and also several others suggested elsewhere with no success I'm afraid.
At some stage I will have to do a clean install to correct these issues I'm having.
For now as long as DISM is successful in normal mode and sfc works in safe mode I am reasonably happy to continue as is.
    Thanks again...

What about a Repair Install instead of a Clean Install?

I think we are but it shouldn't be that way. In my humble opinion, a piece of the puzzle is missing. I wish I knew what could that be.

You are welcome, mate. BTW, if you happen to resolve this issue, no matter which way, keep us posted.

    For those interested in details:

sfc will not complete in normal mode but will in safe mode... | Sysnative Forums

I think it's a rather benign access rights issue that requires correcting somewhere. But I fail to realise what's the (possibly malicious) culprit...

(pity that usually helpful folk on the other forum has not chimed in and followed it up - perhaps they will?)

    KB4598242 Install fails every time

I've been trying to install this update KB4598242 for a few days now without luck. It downloads, then the computer restarts and when it gets to 8% installed, it reboots again then says removing update..

I've tried so many different things, but nothing I've done helps at all. I've even tried the manual install downloaded from the Microsoft repository..still nothing..it keeps failing.

Tried disabling all the Services... still fails.
    Update Troubleshooter finds no issues.
    fsc /scan finds nothing wrong.
You name it, I've probably tried it.
Not sure what is going on.. My computer seems fine, but it kinda bothers me I can't update to latest version.
I really don't want to have to reset my computer.

    Im on 20H2 Build 19042.685

I have the same issue and same 685 build too. Resolved by in-place Windows 10 installation using Media Creation Tool.

When you say in-place Windows 10 installation.. do you mean just installing Windows 10 on top as if you were upgrading?
If so, then that's what I ended doing as well.. no issues and I am now able to install all updates.

    EDIT..
for anyone that wants to do this.. they key is you have to download the Win 10 ISO and extract it somewhere in your computer, then run the setup.exe... choose keep settings and apps, which should be the first option.
