I upgrade to WIN 11 and get Installation failed.

Hello. So I've tried all of the fixes thus far posted regarding upgrading to windows 11. I'm trying to avoid a clean install as I have a lot of files and apps that would need to be restored, and frankly I'm not in the mood to do so.

I ran setupdiag and this is what it found:

    "<SetupDiag xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/setupdiag">

I really would like to be able to upgrade (and have in the past, but rolled back when there was the slowdown issue with the Samsung SSD 980 Pro 2TB drives. I've searched on the exact error code, but haven't found anything that explains the "EVERYTHING" part of the error.

I *really* would love to avoid a clean install if possible

    Currently I'm running :

    Edition Windows 10 Pro
    Version 22H2
    Installed on ‎6/‎12/‎2021
    OS build 19045.2251
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3030.0

Side note, I've tried removing the WFEP with no luck.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi, welcome to tenforums.

What preparation have you done for the upgrade?
Is your PC approved for Win 11? (No specs on PC other than it's a desktop).
Are you running any 3rd party security software?

    Have you..
    a. checked your entire disk - and all disks- (Hard Disk Sentinel - includes SSDS - excellent- full functional trial; Crystal Diskinfo (free) - basic SMART).
    b. if ok, from an admin command prompt run chkdsk c: /scan
    - result on GUI
    c. if ok similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

    Do these all pass?

    Now considering
    FindAbruptDownlevelFailure

    - see:
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/tr...roubleshooting

Downlevel phase: Because this phase runs on the source OS, upgrade errors aren't typically seen. If you do encounter an error, ensure the source OS is stable. Also ensure the Windows setup source and the destination drive are accessible.
I.e. look first to your own O/S and check it.

Consider performing an in-place upgrade repair install of Win 10 unless a key check above fails.

Exactly how are you attempting the upgrade?

    Is Windows update running normally?

How much free space do you have on C: ?

Post a screenshot of all partitions on all disks using a 3rd party partition manager (not Disk Management).

Note that diagnosing upgrade failure can be next to impossible. At the very least very time consuming and repetitive- if someone if willing to give enough of their free time.

    Thanks.

I have a lot of files and apps that would need to be restored, and frankly I'm not in the mood to do so
Then I'm also sure you're using 3rd party disk imaging routinely and regularly so as to recover readily should something go wrong, and you have a current disk image just in case the upgrade goes badly wrong.

Using disk imaging is endlessly recommended here e.g. Macrium Reflect.

    Please confirm.

There is a way to transfer your programs, data, accounts to a clean install of a new build using either Laplink PCMover or Easeus Todo PCTrans. A disk image of the old build (Windows partition) is the most convenient source for these 1-off licensed programs.

The title says that the Win 11 upgrade failed. Are you able to run Win 10?

    - How did you attempt to upgrade, by WU or by running setup.exe from a mounted win 11 iso?
    - Do you have a drive image backup? Upgrades can go wrong and you may not be able to boot (Win 10 and Win 11)

PC is approved for upgrade (I had run Win 11 before and rolled back due to issues with the 980 Pro drive slowing down). No 3rd party security software.

I will try the in-place upgrade repair. As for how I'm attempting the upgrade, I've tried using the media creation tool, USB / ISO, Windows Update etc, all with similar results. I have 796GB free on C:\

I've also disconnected any portable SSD's as part of the troubleshooting also.I upgrade to WIN 11 and get Installation failed.-partition.jpg

Completed. My apologies for the oversight.

I tried via WU, ISO/USB, Windows media creation etc. I do have a drive image backup.

TY for the clarity on where to post. I wasnt sure since it seemed a windows 10 issue, but I can understand why it would belong in the 11 forums.

I recommend you detach ALL other drives living on only the target drive. Better be safe than sorry.
Many upgrades has failed due to disk errors that a simple check disk can fix.

That's what I stated in my other reply, that I unhooked the USB drives prior to installation.. Seems that's a common problem, but apparently not the one I'm encountering

    Thank you for your reply.

From your screenshot, which gives very little information on the partitions indeed compared to what I'm used to seeing, it kind of looks as though both disks 2 and 3 might have or have had Windows installations on them.

    Compare:

If you only have your current system disk in place, does your PC boot normally, and does
    reagentc /info
from an admin command prompt report 'Enabled' and a valid partition number for the Recovery partition?

The Sandisk NVMe drive is or was a boot able drive. It has a Windows boot manager on the EFI Fat32 partition and may be the reason for the errors. You must detach ALL drives.

I’d be inclined to backup all your data and drivers then remove all drives except the nvme drive and do a clean install of win 11. After that you can add and internal storage drives and move your data to the d drive. Might also search the elevenforum site
