I'm trying to do the clean install now.

I ran into a problem of "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk is of the gpt partition style." I fixed it by reading https://www.easeus.com/partition-master/the-selected-disk-is-of-the-gpt-partition-style.html and doing this:

    diskpartlist diskselect disk 3cleanconvert gptexit

So now I could actually select the hard drive to install windows. Then I hit this error: 0x80300024, which I plan to fix by removing the other hard drives How to troubleshoot the error 0x80300024 on Windows 10? - Read Our Articles and Optimize Your PC for Peak PerformanceRead Our Articles and Optimize Your PC for Peak Performance

For removing the other hard drives, is it enough to just remove the data cable from the hard drive? Or do you have to disconnect the cable from the motherboard too? Thanks

Let the Windows installer create the partitions for you.

If you have more than one hard drive, simply disconnect the cable from the drive(s), and label which cable goes to which drive.

I forgot which one, it was made when I made the post two months ago. The instructions were from here.

If the system uses UEFI, and you are installing Windows on the C drive...correct.

How do I check if my motherboard uses UEFI or old BIOS?

My motherboard is MSI Z270-A Pro (mS-7A71).

    BIOS ver: E7A71IMS.170

    Does it mean it's BIOS?

MSI Global not sure if BIOS or UEFI?

    It supports both.

BIOS Features ● UEFI AMI BIOS
    Boot Mode Select [LEGACY+UEFI]
[LEGACY+UEFI] Enables both Legacy BIOS boot mode and UEFI BIOS boot
    mode.

got windows reinstalled, thank you so much guys! The only thing I lost was the firefox and chrome bookmarks. I thought I had copied my entire user folder over to a thumbdrive under ubuntu, but then after reinstallation I realized that user/AppData is missing the Local folder with all the settings. Bummer!
