Storage Spaces pool no longer accessible

    Hey all,

I've got an OWC Express 4M2 running 4 NVME drives as a mirrored set. Suddenly can no longer access the storage pool, all physical drives are reporting no problems.

any idea how to go about getting it mounted again? a lot of the powershell commands I've come across don't seem to be valid anymore, and I'm getting the general sense that it's a really bad idea to keep relying on storage spaces in the future. Some of the advice I've seen on the microsoft forums basically dole out advice that will destroy your data.

Unfortunately that's correct. Simply search tenforums for the few storage spaces threads...and you'll get that impression.

Did your problem perhaps occur after upgrading to Win 11, or a feature update?

I'm wondering what relation to your Storage Space disks 5 & 6 are meant to be in your 1st screenshot.

In your first post you mention 4 disks comprising your Storage Space, rather than 2. Is 4 incorrect- do you mean 2? Or are 2 simply not being shown?

    Dynamic/Foreign - I've not seen that before.
When you move a dynamic disk from one computer to another, which does not support dynamic disk, such as all Windows home editions, and then the dynamic disk created on the previous computer will be flagged as a foreign disk in Disk Management.
I'm therefore wondering what change or event might have led to this.

*** Noting you have Win 11- be aware this is tenforums- for, yes, Win 10. Once again, for Win 11 please see elevenforum.com. Thanks

Yes I only showed 2, there are two pools each with 2 drives in them (mirrored set, 4 disks in total).

I don’t really know what lead to this, it was working fine on Win 11 before. It could have been a windows update (highly concerning). It was being used on a Thinkpad Yoga X5 laptop, which had the thunderbolt/hdmi stop working after an automatic update which apparently is a well known issue. Thought the enclosure was dead, but it was the laptops b0rked drivers/firmware. Bought a new laptop with thunderbolt 4 which lead me to my post above.

I was just able to get it working, I simply imported the foreign disk in Disk Manager and was able to get at the data on one of the mirrors. I also upgraded the pools just before that, but I’m not sure that did anything.

Got the data copied off, nuking the pools and switching to use SoftRaid instead. It’s sad that Microsoft doesn’t support storage spaces at all (but completely on brand for them), so will abandon it completely.

Good that you've not lost data and were able to deal with the 'foreign' status.

Theoretically it should be possible to move storage spaces between PCs - in practice it seems not so reliable.
