How Do I Access Files on a Physically Moved Hard Drive

I recently physically moved two SATA hard drives from a Win 7/Pro x64 machine to a Win 10/Pro x 64 machine.

My intention was to copy data I had stored on these drives to a 2 TB SSD on the Win 10 machine.

In the process I tried to open a *.jpg image file and discovered that I do not have "read permissions to view the properties of this object." I probed the options presented to me and selected the "Advanced" button. The system responded "You have been denied permission to access to this folder"

I explored the long list of settings and found nothing that seems applicable.

What explicit steps in what exact order must I take to regain access to this information?

I saved snips of all the windows I encountered. I elected to not clutter the forum, but I can save each one as a *.jpg and upload them if that would be helpful.

Not 100% sure on what happens after you physically move the hard drives back to the Windows 7 machine.

But I think if you Take Ownership of all the folders/files in the drives while they're connected to the Windows 10 machine, you can access them:

But like I said, I'm not sure what Windows 7 will say after you connect the drives back to that machine. Maybe someone else has more info on this...

Are you sure the drive wasn't encrypted in some way?

I've moved plenty of drives around a myriad of PC builds and never had issues accessing data or needed "permissions" to do so. And certainly, no data corruption.

If you drive isn't encrypted or password protected, you can simply plug it into another PC or external bay and read the contents. No need to "take ownership" or any of that stuff.

All that said... if you're accessing "User" files from say C:\Users\admin (your name)\Documents. There "may" be some permissions you'll need to authorize to access "C:\Users", but that shouldn't cause the data to be corrupt.

If the drive has been encrypted (BitLocker) then you wouldn't shouldn't be able to access anything off the drive, even if it was moved to another PC without providing a BitLocker key/password.
