    Windows won't shut down since last update to V1909 build 18363.900


    Ever since I updated a few weeks ago I can't shutdown or restart.
    I get the shutdown screen but it keeps saying 'shutting down' with the circle revolving around it.

    I now have the latest windows update telling me to restart.
    I tried to but it won't and when I shutdown using the button on the PC it restarts but doesn't do the update.
    I was hoping the new update would fix the problem but now I can't update!

    Any ideas what I should do please?

    Hi, presumably the update was this one:
    KB4560960 CU Win 10 v1903 build 18362.900 and v1909 build 18363.900

    Can't see anything reported similar to your symptoms. Best start by performing some basic checks.

    a. Please download and run HD Tune v2.55 free e.g. from Softpedia.com (there is also a portable version).
    Health and Error Scan tabs for your system disk, Health tab for each of your several others.

    b. If ok, then from an admin command or Powershel prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan

    c. If ok, then similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW.

    Post a screenshot of your partitions using a 3rd party partition manager ensuring text in all columns is visible.

    If the above pass, have you considered uninstalling the update to see what happens?

    Hi and thanks for your help.
    I am in the middle of the HD Tune scans at the moment so far no errors on any drives but it's taking a long while.

    The health status on the main C drive the NVMe 250gb samsung evo does not give me any health status just a 'n/a' But no errors

    I also have a 4TB drive that is given no errors but the health status is

    ST4000DM000-2AE 166 (4000 gb)
    Error scan: OK
    --------------------------------------------------------------current ---Worst Threshold Data status
    Health Status (C7) Interface CRC Error Count --200 ------ 200 -------0 -----1603 attention

    Update:
    Chkdsk reports no errors
    scannow reported 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.'

    So I tried a restart but it still didn't work !

    I tried to uninstall the latest update but i don't get the option to do it even though I do get the option for an update from the 12th of June.

    all of my drives seem ok except for the 4gb one.

    New Update:
    I tried to uninstall using 'wusa /uninstall /kb:4560960'
    but got a message that I could not uninstall as it was essential to windows or something like that.

    - worrying.

    Please download and install Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and see what that says. This gives far and away the best instant commentary right on its GUI- check the tab for each disk and the commentary. (SSDs too).

    You could as a final assessment try Samsung Magician as it's a Samsung Drive
    Samsung Magician Software | Samsung V-NAND SSD | Samsung Semiconductor Global Website

    If convinced the SSD is ok, try disconnecting all other drives and see if you can shutdown etc.

    Have you been using disk imaging routinely as is so often recommended by tenforums members? E.g. Macrium Reflect - free/paid- + external storage for image files?

    Await screenshot of partitions when available.

    1) Whenever possible please post images of steps performed with results into the thread.

    2) For any problems posting images please use share links: one drive, drop box, or google drive

    3) Turn off Windows fast startup > attempt each shutdowns and restarts > report results



    4) Please repeat the steps posted by dalchina so that there are images in the thread.

    5) Report the results of this shutdown command:
    Open administrative command prompt and copy and paste:
    %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 00


    6) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    7) sfc /scannow
    8) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    9) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    10) sfc /scannow
    11) chkdsk /scan

    12) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    So it's UEFI: the 16Mb partition on Disk 2 looks suspiciously like a System Reserved partition.

    Please use e.g. Minitool Partition Wizard and post a screenshot like this- gives more info:

    Before all Zbook suggests, must resolve the lack of SMART params for your SSD as per my previous, and eliminate effect of other disks.

    Good result for disk.

    That was an admin command prompt - not Powershell.

    Try disconnecting the other disks- that will also check whether your PC is really booting from your Disk 1.

    This is a trial and error step:

    Boot using a Windows 10 iso

    type: bcdedit | find "osdevice"

    type: dism /image:M:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions (change M to the applicable drive letter for the partition drive letter seen in the earlier steps: partition=?) ( There is a space between \ / )
