'Pin to taskbar' Folder and Drive in Windows 10

I've pinned the "downloads" folder to the taskbar as per instructions here but when I click on it it opens another icon in the taskbar next to the pinned icon I created. Is there any way of stopping this as it's quite annoying.
Have I done something wrong or is it just Windows?
I'm using the latest Windows 10 Pro version 1909 build 18363.815
    Thanks

Hmm that's odd. Can you tell me what instructions you've read here to accomplish your goal?

    What instructions?

You can pin the shortcut to a folder to the Taskbar by several methods. One is by changing it -
1 Right click on the shortcut, select Properties
2 At the start of the Target field, write in explorer.exe followed by a space then clicking on OK
3 Right click on the shortcut, select Pin to Taskbar

This method, like all methods, creates an icon on the Taskbar. When that icon is used, the File explorer window that it opens has its own entry on the Taskbar in addition to the one you pinned. If that is what you mean then, "Yes, that's just Windows.".

I would check what you have done.
Right-mouse click on the pinned Taskbar Item, and Right-mouse click again on the listed item. Select Properties from the drop-down list.
In Properties, check the Target field. Does it say explorer "<path>", or similar? <Path> is the destination to your desired folder.

That is what I have done. When I click on the pinned shortcut folder it opens up but with another yellow folder icon. On the other taskbar icons there is a line at the bottom of the icon to show that it is open.
Has that changed on the explorer folders?

When you click on Pinned shortcut folder with a Right-mouse click, then you do see a second yellow folder icon.

Otherwise, when you click on a Pinned shortcut folder with a Left-mouse click, then you are presented with your target folder, assuming that everything has been typed properly.

To check everything has been typed properly, take a look at the Target field of the Properties window, as mentioned in my earlier post.
