New camera raw files not recognized

Hey folks, I recently purchased a new Canon camera. I've always used Canon only. I shoot exclusively in the raw format. (CR2). Windows 10 photos opens the images from my 4 year old Canon, but will not with my new Canon. I get the following message. - New camera raw files not recognized-capture.png.. I'm not very techie, but I did look to see if there was a codec package update for Windows 10. No such animal. This is not a critical problem, as my photo editing program opens up the files with no problem It's just nice previewing and culling the images I don't want in Windows photo viewer before I go any further. Thanks in advance for your input. Cheers, Rusty.

What's your new Canon camera? (What is your old one as well?)

The codec may be included with the Digital Photo Professional software. (over 200MB in size.) If you need to download it from Canon, you'll need you camera's serial number.

Thanks for the reply. My new camera is a EOS Rebel SL2 and the old one is a Powershot G1X.

"Canon RAW Codec has been discontinued as a separate download as of 2012. Today the software is available as a plug-in with the Digital Photo Professional software. Please visit the Support homepage to choose your model and access the software."

Whether installing that would add the proper code, I can't say. My SLR is an old T3i. which Win10 has supported for years.

If Microsoft and Canon fail you, you could try third-party codecs: https://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/ It's not free ($9.99US), but there is a free trial to test whether it will work for you.

    Good luck.

I guess you need the appropriate Canon software from here https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/p...loads-software

Windows 10 does get codecs updated via Windows Update but that may not be up to date with the latest cameras.

Thanks guys, good news & not-so-good news. I got to the right download successfully, but when I tried to open up the zip file, I got this message. - New camera raw files not recognized-capture.png, not the user account control window. So I switched over to my admin. account, which I rarely, if ever use. Man, is it slow going . Finally made it to the button that says do you agree to terms, etc. punched the button , up came the download button, punched it and ...nothing. Retried, went away, came back after 30 minutes and nothin". Checked downloads folder, empty. Colour me...stumped.

    Thank you for the reply.
I tried the right click, the run as admin option didn't show at any point. I also have an older Canon that Windows photo recognizes its CR2 images.

And I get previews for .cr2 files for my Rebel T3i, which is from 2011 (more or less). The SL2 is much newer, and newer than your 750D and SX60.
