Does the drive LED light and is there any noise of the drive spinning up? My 5 year old Seagate Expansion drive just started making a whining noise when I plug it it in then silence. I can't access the drive by any means and assume it has expired.

Since your drive is new, just get a new one under warranty.

One curiosity though is that both computers identify drive in device manager as "Seagate Portable SCSI Device" . I would have thought that that designation applied to a different type of storage device
One last thing you could try. In Device Manager uninstall the "Seagate Portable SCSI Device". Then unplug the HDD and plug it back in. See if it is detected correctly this time.

Steve, the drive LED lights up and there's no sound coming from the hard drive . Yes I have decided to go to the easy route. Thanks all
