    How to identify system hang?

My system is WIn10/64 Home with all current updates. It hangs several times a day for no apparent reason. The hangs happen when using various applications. When it hangs the mouse pointer moves, but does not respond to button clicks. The task bar does nothing. The keyboard does nothing. The screen contents remain frozen and do not change - there is no BSD. My only option is to push the Reset button and reboot.

There is no system dump. The only errors in Event Manager say " The name "WORKGROUP :1d" could not be registered on the interface with IP address xxxx.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx", "The previous session did not finalize the tracking file on device \Device\HarddiskVolume1 (W:). The tracking file has been reset.", and "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first." The Reliability Monitor page shows nothing other than an unscheduled restart

I've run SFC/scannow which completed with no errors found. Chkdsk on my Samsung SSD boot drive completed with no errors. Samsung Magician reoports no errors. I have no problems with any software I use.

    Hello @bbinnard,

As a start, please perform the following . . .

     SFC and RestoreHealth

[1] Press the Win + X keys together > Command Prompt (Admin).
[2] Highlight ALL the commands below.

    IMPORTANT:

    • It is recommended when running SFC that Fast Startup is turned OFF [ Turn it back ON when finished ] => How to Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10

    • If SFC finds any ERRORS that it can NOT repair, run SFC again upto 3 more times, Restarting after each to allow any pending actions to be implemented.

    • DISM will initially try and Repair ANY Corrupted or Missing files using the Component Store.
If this is NOT possible, DISM will use Windows Update. Therefore, Internet access is required.
If you are NOT connected to the Internet, you will receive a Error: 0x800f081f.

[3] Press the Ctrl + C keys together.
[4] Right-click inside the Administrator: Command Prompt Window > Paste.
    [5] Press Enter.

    Code:

    sfc /scannow
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    sfc /scannow

    • When the above has finished processing . . .

[6] Right-click on the title bar of the Administrator: Command Prompt Window > Edit > Select All.
[7] Right-click on the title bar of the Administrator: Command Prompt Window again > Edit > Copy.

    • Paste the results into your post using the [CODE] tags . . .

[8] In your post, click the Hashtag icon #.
[9] Click INSIDE the [CODE]Here[CODE] tags and press the Ctrl + V keys together.

    • In your post it will look like this . . .

    Code:

    <<< Results here >>>

     SFC Error Report

However, if there are STILL SFC ERRORS . . .

[1] Press the Win + X keys together > Command Prompt (Admin).
    [2] Highlight the command below.

    NOTE:

If you have a Relocated Desktop, then change the %UserProfile% part of the Command below to the actual path of the Relocated Desktop folder.

[3] Press the Ctrl + C keys together.
[4] Right-click inside the Administrator: Command Prompt Window > Paste.
    [5] Press Enter.

    Code:

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log > "%UserProfile%\Desktop\SFC_Details.log"

    • This will create a SFC_Details.log file on the Desktop.

    EITHER:

Copy & Paste the results into your post using the [CODE] tags . . .

[1] Open the SFC_Details.log file in Notepad.
[2] Press the Ctrl + A keys together.
[3] Press the Ctrl + C keys together.
[4] In your post, click the Hashtag icon #.
[5] Click INSIDE the [CODE]Here[CODE] tags and press the Ctrl + V keys together.

    • In your post it will look like this . . .

    Code:

    <<< Results Here >>>

    OR:

UPLOAD the file => How to Upload and Post Screenshots and Files at Ten Forums.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks Paul - I didn't know my post got published because my system froze (or I thought it did) while I was typing more text. I was going to add that I already did DISM commands that check and clean up; they all completed with no errors.

After that I looked the Event Viewer/WIndows Logs/Application list and found quite a few entries like this:

[10448:7332:0831/153058.470:WARNING:chrome_content_verifier_delegate.cc(212)] Corruption detected in extension jfnndgdcnclaikcihmjghocclbnnjlpb installed at: C:\Users\Birk\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Greaselion\Temp\scoped_dir10448_596603208, from webstore: 0, corruption reason: 1, should be repaired: 1, extension location: kComponent

So I emptied that directory. It fills up with new stuff of course, but it looks like I've got some sort of corrupt extension installed in Brave. So I'm in the process of tracking that down now. Hopefully I'll be able to find the bad actor and remove it; if so I'll post results here.

IN-Place Windows Install worked - with some help

I was unable to find any cause for my system lockups so I decided to do an IN-Place reinstall of Windows. The process worked OK until I got to what I think was the last reboot at about the 81% complete stage. This reboot failed with a BSD saying the system could not find the boot drive. So I booted my Macrium Reflect rescue disk (physically a USB flash drive) and ran it's Fix Boot Problems routine.

That completed ok so I rebooted and the In-Place install continued at 81% and continued to completion. After that finished my system rebooted and Voila! I had a new version of Win10 and all my software and data was still there.

There were a couple of Windows Update fixes to install, so I did those with no problem. It's too soon to tell if my system hangs have been fixed, but I'm pretty hopeful. Time will tell.

It's been almost 3 days since I did the Win10 reinstall and I've had zero hangs. So it's pretty clear that the reinstall fixed whatever the problem was. Consequently I'd suggest anyone who is having weird problems try that method before devoting hours of time trying to identify the problem and then trying to fix it.
