BSOD and Lockups - Windows 10 version 1903

    Hello,

I built my PC last winter to upgrade my aging Plex server and I've had irregular BSODs and lockups. I've done the following to troubleshoot this issue:

    • Memtest for 24+ hours (5-6 passes), all memory installed and no errors
    • Format and reinstall Windows 10
    • Unplugged most peripherals
    • Checked Event Viewer, no clear error
    • Ran WhoCrashed, referenced a lot of things

I'm going to remove PlayOn as that was referenced by WhoCrashed. What else could be going on though?

    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    4) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    5) sfc /scannow
    6) chkdsk /scan
    7) wmic recoveros set autoreboot = false
    8) wmic recoveros set DebugInfoType = 7
    9) bcdedit /enum {badmemory}

    10) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    11) Make sure that there is no over clocking while troubleshooting.

    12) Please post a share link for C:\windows\memory.dmp

    16) For any BSOD:

    a) run the V2 log collector to collect new log files

    b) open file explorer> this PC > C: > in the right upper corner search for: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
    > if the file size is < 1.5 GB then zip > post a separate share link into the thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

This may be a shot in the dark, but you could try updating your AMD chipset drivers. According to one of the dumps I analyzed, there was quite a bit of references to those specific drivers.
    Code:

All in all, it seems as though the problem is most likely the hardware. zbook already responded with a bucket list you should follow in order to figure out the issue.

Thanks for the response. After removing the PlayOn application, I found that povrtdev.sys was still showing up in Driver Verifier. When I narrowed down the list of 3rd party drivers to test, I found that it was the only 3rd party driver that was making Windows crash whenever I would run the Verifier, at least at boot-up. With that said, I wasn't sure of a safe way to remove it and I wanted to make sure that all references to PlayOn were gone. Today, I reformatted the drive and have reinstalled Windows 10, which will be the 2nd time I've had to do this. Once I've reloaded the essential software, I'll be circling back to your steps to see if that helps identify anything problematic after reformatting.

I found a secondary culprit. In addition to povrtdev.sys (PlayOn), amdryzenmasterdriver.sys also caused a BSOD via Driver Verifier on boot up. Oddly enough, I hadn't installed AMD Ryzen Master Utility, but rather everything from the latest AMD graphics drivers (adrenaline installer). When I was reinstalling everything after doing a clean install of Windows 10, I was installing components piecemeal and running the Driver Verifier after each install to make sure it was able to boot up without issue. Previously, I couldn't even get to Windows login without a BSOD whenever I would run Driver Verifier against the 3rd party drivers. After installing the AMD Graphics drivers, I found that there is an extra program called the AMD Problem Report Wizard that is installed by default. This "Report" program adds a bad amdryzenmasterdriver.sys driver to your system that won't get updated/replaced when you go to actually install AMD Ryzen Master Utility. The only remedy to get rid of this bad amdryzenmasterdriver.sys driver is to uninstall the graphics drivers entirely, then reinstall it sans "Report" utility. Furthermore, installing the AMD Ryzen Master Utility after all this installs a amdryzenmasterdriver.sys driver that does not cause a BSOD or lockup.

I ran memtest using the latest version (UEFI) for two complete runs (8 passes total, taking 16 hours total) and no problems were presented. It should be noted that I also had previously ran it using the legacy memtest program for over 24 hours and had no problems then either. I also ran Driver Verifier against all 3rd party drivers for the entire weekend and no random reboots, lockups, etc.

At this point, I'm suspecting that my problems were likely software related. What I'm struggling to understand is why the computer would just completely lock up and sometimes it would do a BSOD and reboot itself. Also, my problem would come and go, i.e. no issues for several days then lockup. So, I'm going to perform the SeaTools and HD Tune just to make sure those don't return any issues either.
