    Can't open Settings (Windows Update)

Everything went well on the Win10 installation, but the only problem is that when I go to access the settings tab in the start menu, it just flashes briefly like it tries to open the settings window, and then disappears, so I can't access anything in the settings. No update checking, just nothing. Everything else seems to work... I can also access the system info window and it shows Windows 10 to be activated.

Edit: I can get to the control panel, and I can see Windows Update, but I get this error message when I try to click on it:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

I Googled the message and there are many reasons for that error, and many solutions - but none specific to my issue (that I can find).

red454, I am having the exact same issue and Google brought me to your thread after trying other solutions. If anyone has an answer, would appreciate it.

On another note, the Search bar (via the taskbar & Ctrl S) is not working for me at all, not sure if others are having the same problem.

As usual there are a wide variety of causes, and many things that people have done - some successful, some not. So it will be a lot of trial and error. I will look into it this evening.

I suspect it has to do with the install going over my Win 7 and keeping all my apps and settings. I am sure a fresh install would have been fine. I would like to avoid a fresh install as I have a ton of software on my system and it would be a major pain to have to (find it all and) reload all of it.

Edit: I did find this info - How to Fix Side-By-Side Configuration Error - Method 2 - YouTube

Edit #2: Skip down to post #8 - it worked for me.

Apparently Windows Updates is in the SETTINGS under "Update & recovery" now. If only I could access Settings to advise you!
