Windows update assistant stuck at 99%

I have been trying all night to update my already windows 10 pc to the new update. I downloaded the update assistant and it has been stuck at 99% for hours.
I really need help as now I am afraid I will lose everything if I reboot.

I only have access to a wifi connection as we don't have wired internet where I live so we rely on hotspots.

Can I just somehow stop this thing and do a system restore to at least get me back to where I was.

Hello, could you clarify exactly where you are in the sequence- bearing in mind your comments about your internet connection, is it just that the download hasn't completed, or that the installation has stalled?

unfortunate.. this is why we constantly urge users to use disk imaging routinely so they can always restore their PC relatively quickly and easily to a previously working state without technical help, even if their disk fails. The images also act as a full backup. (E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for disk image sets)

System Restore is unavailable for an upgrade- it only applies to the current major build. All restore points are deleted (as they should be) when upgrading.

The way to 'go back to the previous build' is via Advanced Startup options- which would require the disk to be in a state to support that, and to be able to access those options either by booting from a Win 10 boot disk, or by booting your PC at least to the login screen, then shift left click restart and hence to the Advanced Startup options.

Do you have full backups? Even if your PC is unbootable, your data should still be accessible and retrievable if it comes to that.

This is what I see, and have seen since 7 am it is now almost 11 am.
I already had 10, just needed the updated version.
I said that about my wifi because microsoft keeps telling people to use a wired connection.

I think that means it's not completed the download- I guess it's not restarted yet.

If so, should be safe to interrupt.

You can then try a manual download, so you have the iso/boot disk and can then use that as many times as you need as well as for some repair functions.

Separate the download from the update process.

Oh no I don't have full backups as I have lost my external hard drive. I swear I hate windows 10 as much as I love it.
And I know nothing about any of that other stuff. 10 makes me stupid.

Thanks we've had some issues at home today, so sorry I am just now replying.
The actual windows up date actually starting working and all in all it only too 15 hours.

Thanks so much for help though.
I do have one more question, I have a laptop with windows 8 on it, can I still upgrade it to 10 or will I have to pay to do so?
