    Check for updates from desktop

I can put an icon on my desktop to open settings - update windows. How do I put an icon on the desktop that will actually check for updates?

    Make a shortcut with location %windir%\explorer.exe ms-settings:windowsupdate-action

An alternative: save the following into a .cmd file and put it onto the desktop.

    C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:windowsupdate-action

That isn't an alternative. It is exactly the same pal.

    You said: C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:windowsupdate-action

If you are suggesting you could use the exact same thing as a .bat or .cmd or .ps1 or .psm or .lnk then you could.

It is the ms-settings:windowsupdate-action that is interesting wherever you put it.

Sorry for having misused the word 'alternative', as my English is terribly poor.
The following is not an alternative, but it works in a VBS file without a command window appearing.

    Createobject("wscript.shell").run("ms-settings:windowsupdate-action") , 0
