Correct. You will need to "upgrade" to Windows 10 first.
DANG! That's where I missed it. Well, I guess I'm back to square 1.

So does this mean I'm out-a-luck as far as getting my current copy of Windows 10 activated ?
Nope, the activation servers a fairly busy, it might take a few days to activate Win10, but not to worry. All windows allow you to install on a trial basis - in other words some features might not be available (personalization) unitl activated, but other than that Windows functions.

Give it a few days, it should automatically activate is you're connected to the Internet (I disconnect for most of the time, only connect when I need something - so it might take me a week or more to activate)

Yep, head down to the 'tape' library and get your backups

Either restore a backup or do a fresh install of your qualifying OS, then upgrade to Win10 from within Windows, launch setup on the install media - don't boot to the DVD or Flash drive, just access it from File Explorer.

Yes, but a great many things are not enabled in Windows 10 until activated. Most updates to the OS are NOT applied until activated. At least it's on a separate hard drive in that computer....

I just upgraded my Wife's 8.1 laptop w/o a hitch but same problem. Won't activate. Guess I'll just wait and hope it comes through within a couple days.
Downloaded ISO with the media creation tool and did the upgrade. Hadn't received the notification yet that the upgrade was available.

Found a solution to error code: 0xC004F034: "mash the heck out of the [Activate] button."

I can't take the credit for this. Someone else discovered it. I found it in the activation forums here (I think). I just can't remember where. But it works...whew...I'm glad I don't have to go back to 7 and reinstall everything again. Just do a search of the activation forums for the original post if your curious. Use the error code as the search criteria.

UPDATE: I found the post. It is #26 in "after upgrade windows 10 cannot activate Error code: 0xC004F034"
