Basically yes, unless you have Pro and Defer updates turned on. In that case 1511 will be getting the features update to Anniversary Update (1607) at present. I tested that here.

    Others may disagree.

well I've just tried someone else's suggestion to use the upgrade assistant which I did and failed again. it froze at. 32% and refused to move. so I'm. currently waiting for things to revert. so if clean booting did not do the job I will attempt your method tho I'm honestly not confident anything will work now.

im back on now and in the update history its now showing that its failed to install updates.

    :EDIT:

btw. bit confused on how exactly you would go about upgrading via the ISO.. ive got a big enough memory stick. and can defo put another ISO on it. but i thought this was primarily for fresh installs and recovery. im guessing it would act just the windows 10 update from 7 in that you hit upgrade and it gives you the option to keep files or what not.

Go to the Microsoft Media Creation tool. Download and execute tool. Walk through panels to create USB key.

(Keep this version of the Media Creation tool and label it V1703. In the future execute it and it will download 1703. When the fall update comes out download that media creation tool. It will download the new version.)

Enter BIOS and disable Secure boot and Fast Boot.

Plug in USB key, navigate to setup.exe, double click. The in place update will start.

Yes the USB can also be used to clean install, boot from it.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Back up data before updating, safety first.

the question to if it works or not is the real question

True. The inplace upgrade is easy and not all that time consuming assuming it goes by the book.

    Good luck. Keep us posted.
