    I see, I didn't know that.
I experienced the same as you guys by following the official upgrade step.

I fixed the issue by changing the product key to the key that is already in there. It is the generic key for Win 8.1 Pro which is VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

Enter that key and follow the instructions. Windows then activated fine.

That's what we have as activation key. With what did you change that? If you entered the same key, it didn't work for me.

Can I reinstall Windows 10 on my computer after upgrading with free upgrade?

Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer or Media Creation Tool on an activated Windows 7 or 8.1 PC, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need a product key for re-activations on the same hardware. If you make a meaningful change to your hardware, you may need to contact customer support to help with activation. You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.
Hi Brink are you confirmed activated using the GWX method or anyone else for that matter? I just dont fancy having to format back to Windows 7, update it until I get the GWX notification and then have to upgrade to 10 again if it's just a server issue. I done the upgrade with the media creation tool as the GWX update wouldn't work, it didn't prompt me for keys or anything it just upgraded my machine but now I'm stuck not able to activate. Any info would be great cheers.

    Hello Dan,

That's a quote from Microsoft, but you might give it a day or two with keep trying to activate to see if you may get lucky.

Yeh, I had that as the product key already too. I went to "Change Product Key", re-entered the same product key and followed the steps and it activated OK.

Unfortunately didn't work. Guess I'll wait a day or two.

    Same Issue

I have exact same issue on my desktop with legit Windows 8.1 key. Strangely enough just tried my mum's Toshiba laptop, same method (mediacreationtool upgrade) and same result.

I work for an ISP and this morning we used the exact same method to upgrade 4 Samsung laptops (Win 8.1) and a Windows 7 HP desktop and all activated fine. mmm

Gotta be activation server issue. Also noticed previously that if it wasn't activated some options e.g themes etc were not available to change until activation.
