When you have win8 activated and want to WIN 10. You have to upgrade. Can't do with clean install when go to WIN10. The activated license on WIN8 have to generate to WIN10 license. So you will get WIN10 activated.
Accept you have bought new license for WIN10. you can do clean install then install license for WIN10.
Seems to be the case, it's unfortunate, I waited as Microsoft guys told me via telephone, but in the end I'll have to reinstall Win 8 first.
Thanks
So I just had my own experience with this, I was using Windows 10 Insider Preview 10532, now I only went onto the insider program because inputmapper wasn't working right with Windows 10 retail, so anyway, I am upgraded from a Windows 8 Pro key.
I changed my motherboard yesterday and of course it then said my windows wasn't activated, in the activation screen I was seeing the usual stuff, this error message and that my key was blocked blah blah. Already read this and other threads so fully expected I had to go back to win 8 then once activated on that upgrade to win 10, real pain in the you know what! Did an MS support chat this morning, 40+ mins wasted to get the same answers, need to roll back to win8, they promise I won't lose my settings and programs, blah blah, tried to do that but got a couple of error messages that stopped me, fortunately! So I remembered that last night I'd read in here about a new insider build 10558, I had left that downloading from a "source" so figuring I had nothing to lose I installed that, it upgraded to it no problem, but of course said I wasn't activated, now the activation screen is a bit different in this one but same problem, so I click the button to enter a new key, question is, what key to use? I don't have a windows 10 key obviously, I have an email with 5 of my windows 8 keys, 3 windows 8 pro and 2 that were converted to media center keys, entered one of the media center keys expecting it to spit it out and laugh at me, but no it accepted the key, I clicked activate and it said I was activated, off a win 8 key, so did MS change their activation system with this new win10 insider build to accept win 8 keys????
Probably because you have separate windows keys... mine is OEM, haven't had time to redo installation. I will try this week and see what happens.
