    KB4038788 install failure

Over the last few days I've installed KB4038788 on 3 Dell Desktops. Not the smoothest update but I was ultimately successful. This morning I've been trying unsuccessfully to update a Dell Inspiron laptop, i5 with 8GB running Win 10 Home.

First attempt resulted in a failure. Succeeding attempts got to 22% and then stalled. I'm assuming that the update servers are over loaded so I tried downloading the msi but that gets to "copying files to windows update cache" and will go no further. Windows update is still running in the background so I'm assuming the two processes are conflicting.

I ran the windows update troubleshooter and that run successfully (I assume) but then it got to the searching for new updates and stuck there as well.

I tried disabling the windows update service but the downloading is still pending. Also ran the troubleshooter again and it hangs at searching for new updates.

Update: I restored the system from a 7/14 backup image and although it took a bit of time and several restarts, everything updated correctly. Wacky Edge even sorted itself out after a few minutes.

    Hello SoFine409

I had very similar issues updating my HP Stream 13.

In the end the update successfully downloaded and installed after I carried out the following recommended processes:-

First carried the three DISM check and restore processes which revealed and confirmed repaired an issue.

Next carried the sfc \scannow process and that concluded satisfactorily.

Then I carried out the SoftwareDistribution cleanup process.

Following these processes KB4038788 downloaded and installed.

I thought this info might be of interest.

Hi Giraffe70. Thinks for the info. Interesting that two different solutions worked. I was thinking that part of my problem was that my laptop had not been turned on since mid-July so there were a lot of app updates waiting to be installed. This together with a relatively slow processor and WiFi connection just brought the system to a standstill. I noticed that after I reimaged and began the update process anew, It needed three cold boots to get all of the updates to finish installing. After the first cold restart two cmd windows briefly flashed. I sure hope the October Update goes better then this one did.
