And here is my most recent experience, @cereberus. I replaced my MSI motherboard with an Asus motherboard. I am dual booting Windows 10 and Windows 7. I kept the same SSD and HDD that have Windows 10 on the SSD and Windows 7 on the HDD. I did the sysprep with generalize on the Windows 7. I booted into Windows 7, ran the command SLUI 4 to bring up the phone activation window, then activated Windows 7 on the new system, no issues (retail license). Then I booted into Windows 10 Pro. It went through the process of configuring for the new hardware. I expected I would have to transfer my digital license from the old "computer" (motherboard) to the new "computer". But.... nope..... It automatically came up with "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account"! Did not have to do anything manually for the "transfer?" of the Windows 10 license.
    This is odd isn't it?

I guess we need to collect more evidence to ascertain if rules have quietly changed (I find that hard to believe), or you just got lucky.

Just quickly created a vm, and logged in with MS account, and it does not activate automatically.

I have heard that former Technical Programme users were (unofficially) granted a free PRO licence - perhaps that follows you as an Insider - pure speculation here though.

It is interesting that after all this time MS have still never modified the EULA to reflect fact the activation troubleshooter works regardless if original licence was oem or not.

I am 99% certain that MS cannot tell history of digital licence.

I had an old laptop which came with W8 preinstalled, and I upgraded at some point to AU version, and mobo died. I installed Home on a laptop that had Vista, and the digital licence transferred fine!

So am I in breach of EULA - technically I an sure yes, but MS introduced the tool that allows digital transfers, so I do not see how they could prosecute any individual for violating EULA when they introduced the very tool that permits one to do just that.

In the end, Windows licensing is full of inconsistencies.
One cannot transfer the license unless one has an MS account. It cannot be done using a local account. Therefore, firstly, this is incentive for users to open an MS account. I would think when a majority of users see that they can save money, they will do so.

I'm sure they keep track of digital license transfers. I have an inkling it's in a hidden folder in one's OneDrive via one's MS account. Not altogether sure, but quite positive this is where one's account info, Store library, stored Favorites, different devices, Office info, OS settings, and other info is stored also. I'm thinking when an MS account is created, a hidden OneDrive folder(s) and/or subfolders are created whether one uses OneDrive or not. They have to title it something, so why not OneDrive for that is also revenue for them. All neatly residing on a server with one's email address for access.

At this point I don't think MS cares if one transfers the digital license as long as one is using 10, which is, of course, the only OS it'll work on. For now, I think they allow this also as an incentive to continue getting everyone moved over to 10. This will be a huge savings for them so far as supporting just one OS. Supporting multiple OSs has got to be costing them big bucks. This means less labor for them developing code for security updates.

Just as Apple and Google, MS is also making revenue off 8/8.1 and 10 with their respective Stores and ads within UWP apps. Once the ad-less app version is purchased, no more ads. MS gets a slice of the pie either way, just as Apple and Google do.

Also, so far as I know to date, one can upgrade and activate a 10 using a legit 7, 8, or 8.1 key. Just a few months ago I upgraded a legit 10 Home (that upgraded from a 7 Home) to 10 pro using a legit 8 pro key. It listed as $100 upgrade via the Store. Saved me money. :)

A number of us Insiders were granted a free license dual booting. Thing is though, only my Insider is listed in my devices within my account. The other partition is not, although it's activated and fully functional.

I wonder if it is because I used the same computer name and if everything else was close enough:

Notice there is no serial number shown. Likely my old retail motherboard probably showed exactly the same thing - and computer name. @cereberus - a VM would be a different type of device, so it would not "inherit" the digital license as the host PC, and it probably has a different computer name as well.

@NavyLCDR - Interesting idea - it must have something to do with you keeping ssd rather than clean installing. I guess we will never be sure.

Talked to a MS support guy yesterday.

The initial question is how do I SEE my licenses on my MS account after connecting my 4 comps. Turns out I don't.
I am in this predicament, throwing everything out, migrating from DDR3 to DDR4 and from AM3 to AM4 so basically nothing will remain.

After getting that in his head, he asked me for my W7 licenses receipts. Sure, got them. So scan them and send them to us. Well the are not paper, I have bought three W7 from Amazon in '09 and '10 and those are digital receipts.

(Amazon no longer gives you the ability to look up receipts that old, btw . )

We settled on me sending in my W10 Product ID and a photo of my Authenticity Certificates. I also checked what license I have on the 10 machines and its Retail ( cmd:\> slmgr -dli ).

I tell you this, because I am not sure the Activation Troubleshooter Tutorial would help in my case, but then again, I am not there yet.

@ NavyLCDR On a clean install I get those auto generated computer names. Which seem to be different every time, even on the same PC? It's only latter on that I change them to what I want. Sometimes days latter. Those systems activate with the DL right away. Not saying your wrong, just a FYI post. I have yet to use the Activation Troubleshooter to transfer a DL. I have used it to fix an activation issue though. Occasionally I'll have a PC refuse to activate with a cryptic error message. In the past I would often get dead soldiers showing in my devices lists. The old name and the new name. I'd have to delete the old entries. Now, the names seem to change on their own. Takes days sometimes though for them to catch up.

If you have upgraded from say Windows 7 or 8, to 10, The Windows 7/8 product code is stored in the Registry. Showkey will find it. Is it tracked/looked at after you get your DL? I have no idea? I'm not even sure its looked at during the upgrade. My gut feeling is all they check is, is the qualifying OS legally activated, and what edition is it.

Are you using a Microsoft Account? If yes are any devise listed when you log into it online?
As far as I know slmgr will show all the upgrades as Retail, regardless of whether the qualifying OS is OEM or Retail. Which is likely why you can transfer any DL to a new PC.

@alphanumeric, the strange thing is that the new motherboard replaced the old computer on my Microsoft Account. But, as someone pointed out, it's possible that happened because it was the SSD with the same Windows 10 and not a clean install on the new motherboard.

Yes @alphanumeric, I tied my comps to MS . Tried doing it a while ago but turned out I had to log on to every comp using my MS account and that was a no go, so I waited and now they improved on it so I can choose to use a local account or an MS account as logon. Worst case one may use a pin, but considering my MS account pwd is along the lines of: $of01t3tGltUi6Qi%gLvRFwt0I2pVDo&K I was happy to be able to use a local account.

However, on my laptop, which I connected yesterday, I had to insert my MS password on first login, only to be able to select local logon afterwards, so it seems it works slightly differently depending on god-knows-what.

To answer you question, yes two of my comps show up when logging in to my account at MS, the laptop does not show yet, but I expect it is only a matter of a day or so. Not sure.
