windows automatically re-enabling Windows Update service

I typically have the Windows Update service disabled so that i can download/install updates when i want to. However, sometime over the last month or so windows has started automatically re-enabling the Update service - I disable it... check it a few days later & it's back on again... repeat....

Anyone else have this issue - it seems to only be occurring on one of my machines

That is normal behaviour, there are bunch of critical services, which will start even when disabled.

You can disable something, Windows Updates are dependant on, and that will break them, like:

Disabling "Network List Service" or "Network Location Awareness" will cause this error:

ok - thanks a lot for the info. It is odd that it only seems to be occurring on 1 of my machines & only over the last month or so. I've never noticed it happening before.

It may be that a month or so ago that machine was updated to Creators Update (1703) while the rest are still on Anniversary Update (1607). There are some changes in the way services behave in 1703.

This machine is still running 1511. I have other machines on 1511, 1607 and 1703 so it's a mystery :)
