I'm having an hard time updating to Windows 10 aswell.
Ever since I formatted my laptop yesterday for the preparation for Windows 10, my windows update no longer shows that I reserved windows 10 while it did before I formatted. I followed the methods posted online to force the installation, while that works, once I finish the preparation to install windows 10, it ends up with error 80240020 over and over again.

Got tired of waiting so I just downloaded the update from Microsoft website.
All you have to do is download the tool and you can update to Windows 10, you don't need to create an ISO (unless you really want to).

So it will take your Windows 8.1 product key for the Windows 10 installation? Is your product key OEM, or full retail?

When I ran mediacreationtoolx64, the only that happened was a file created in
    c:\windows\prefetch called mediacreationtoolx64.exe-218255fb.pf

I'm on the Windows 10 waiting list and all of my updates are current. I have the Windows icon on my bottom tray and I have a valid copy of Widows 7 home.
My problem is that the update history comes up with the same failure error and I'm concerned that this will prevent my upgrade to Windows 10. This error has no reference number associated with the failure. I have tried to use the Microsoft FIX IT tool to analyze the failures and I still have the failures. I've had a Microsoft tech use remote desktop to resolve the problem and he couldn't as he did the same things I've already tried.
