    windows creator update gone wrong

Hi there, my machine just tried to install the update to windows 10 creator, the update seemed to go ok but when the update was done and the machine re started all went well right up to the login page entered my password and then the screen went blank, started up task manager then using msconfig i restarted windows with everything turned off it started up ok and i could see the desk top tried different configurations but all i get is a blank screen, cant do a role back as the update disabled role back and deleted all the saves.

    any ideas?

Hi astrafax. Welcome to the TenForums @astrafax

If it was doing the update there should be an option to go back.

Please have a look at the Advance Startup menu. You will see red arrow in screen shots that takes you to go back a build.

Easiest way to get the menu's started, hold shift key down and click Restart

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

Any chance you have an Nvida Graphics card? I think when you say blank screen you could also mean just a black screen.

    Have a look at this.

    Hi Ken
Just to let you know that i managed to get it to restore to the previous version of windows and i'm back up and running, but no doubt it will try to update again.

Do you know if i was to get rid of all the nvidea drivers and stuff will it update properly, or will it just do the same thing when i re-install the drivers again?

To be honest I don't know as I don't know when the questionable driver gets downloaded.

I think the trick might be to perform the update yourself using the in place repair / upgrade process.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

When it asks to get updates as part of the upgrade decline, actually do the process disconnected. Once you are up on Creators enter the nVidia software and tell it not to update drivers.

Then I would tell Windows to stop updates.

I found this article and this is what I'm using in 1703. It must be working as my Wi-Fi card requires an ancient driver and I know there are updates, I get one every major update.

    https://www.howtogeek.com/302595/how...dware-drivers/

In the article quite a ways down there is a link labelled “Disable Automatic Driver Updates Hacks”
This downloads a zip file with two registry hacks. Read the paragraph above the link. I used the hack on my V1703 (Creators). Likely have to run Hack after each major update, Anniversary, Creator, XXXX.

Once you have driver updates stopped go online and let Windows apply updates.

I would recommend a product like Macrium Reflect as a backup to the Windows restoring processes.

I hope this works as I'm not sure if the Nvida driver issue is loaded with Creators update from key or subsequently downloaded after the initial 1703 update.

I think I posted what another user did. You can search our forum for answers as well. I like to use Google. I would search

    Nvida 1703 Black Screen site:tenforums.com

adding the site:tenforums.com forces google to only give results from our site. You can try other sites as well.

Post back with your experience. Other will want to know how you made out and what you did.

    Good luck.
