Repeated Windows Update Failed to install KB4022725 - Windows 10 1703

Greetings. I have been referred to tenforums by answers.microsoft.com who have been unable to assist in resolving the problem. Original thread is here

This could probably be broken into two sections.
1: Repeated failure of Windows Update to install KB4022725
2: In place Repair Install from this excellent article from tenforums here which is failing to work after d/l it 4 times and following the instructions. This article was linked as a possible resolve to the above Windows Update problem.

    Architecture:
ASUS ROG G751J. Windows 10 Home X64 (No other OS), 16GB RAM Standard, Standard Hybrid (64GB SDD/1TB HDD), Nvidia 4GB 980 GTXm Standard
WinVer = 1703 Build: 15063.296 (Why on earth can we not copy that from the info screen lol)
    UI-Language = en-US

In Summary of steps taken so far:

    • Read countless threads on this problem and followed the majority of their advice.
    • Manual download of kb4022725 and install as administrator (twice I've downloaded this 500+ mb file)
    • Clean boot
    • Downloaded and used the troubleshooter, repeatedly
    • Also tried the built-in troubleshooter, repeatedly
    • Cleared Windows Update Cache (after stopping the service)
    • Checked drives/Virus Scans/Fragmentation etc
    • Drivers are up-to-date (New Asus ROG Laptop which has given no grief - Windows 10 was the default OS)
    • sfc /scannow
    • dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    • dism /online /get-intl
    • chkdsk /scan
    • Disabled VPN / Disabled Anti-Virus / Disabled Firewall
    • Unplugged all USB devices
    • Numerous others I can't recall offhand.

I am at my wits end with this problem which has been plaguing me for weeks now. I have extensively researched and tried to resolve over this time. As a direct result on following the advice from answers.microsoft.com I have gone from a secure system to a totally insecure system.

These are some of the steps that have been taken on advice from the other forum (which honestly scare the heck out of me)

    • Uninstall Anti-Virus
    • Uninstall Firewall
    • Disable VPN
    • Disable UEFI Secure Boot
    • d/l +- 14GB of Windows Install files to attempt to fix a security update (and doesn't work)

I have used Windows since version 3.1 and DOS from ver 2.11 and for the first time I'm genuinely considering ditching Windows. This is not my preference. Guys I really need help please. I'm sure you can imagine my frustrations so will keep them to myself.

    Many thanks in advance :)

Hi Farstrike. Welcome to the TenForums @FarStrike

Could you tell us what happened when you did the inplace upgrade?

How did it fail. You need Secure Boot off and you you need to disable FAST Boot in UEFI (BIOS). I see you disable Secure Boot.

    Welcome,

Hold it, you are overreacting a bit, I learned a long time ago to not sweat this kind of things , answer if fast boot was disabled, a lot of users had issues with this WU.

Your not totally insecure , the barbarians are not at the gates, and Trump will not bomb SA as far as I know.

    Hi Farstrike,

can you ZIP the cbs log, Emerson was looking in the right place, not neccessarily the right error message.
Also like to see a copy of the setupapi log.

can you run this tool as well, copy/paste the output

CBS Log - being a bit blonde here. Cannot find a link to attach a file - only an image or video. Any guidance please? Ready to upload it.

UEFI - Caledon was correct. Fast Boot was not disabled. I have since disabled it and run the In Place Repair a few times. Still the same error unfortunately.

    In-Place-Repair:
No error code. Just the greyed out options. Only manner to proceed is to wipe everything - not saving settings or apps. This is not an option lol. Image and description below.

Repeated Windows Update Failed to install KB4022725 - Windows 10 1703-place-repair-choose-what-keep.jpg

    1. Windows is installed in the default C:\Windows directory as per the manufacturer original install.
    2. Both the Windows Image and the Live in-place-repair were performed using the latest version of the tool. It is not an older image.
    3. Multiple attempts:
      1. Downloading a fresh ISO (several times each)
        1. Using default settings
        2. User defined settings, stipulating X64, English US

      2. Performing the update live

I just cannot get it to allow the first two options in the above picture.

using on screen keyboard to type this. windws became unresponsve shortly after last post. task manager showed countless Windows Registry threads maxing PU. had to use power button to initiate shutdown. 1 hour later had to hold power button down to swutchoff. on reboot neither keyboard works (laptop & exteernal kbd) device mgr says registry entry incomplete or corrupted. del driveers & reboot doesnt fix problem. updatw drivers goes to blooming windows update which caused all these problems lol.

there is NO REINSTALL option for device drivers! windows sfc shows no probklems, scandisk no problems, startup repair no problems, system useless restore fails and delete its own restore = speechless

Farstrike it sounds like system is dying. So many routines are reporting no issue but you are painfully aware of them.

A clean install will likely be less work and frustration than this diagnostic process, especially as everything is "Okay".

In this tutorial could you do option one, step 3 and Step 4 and report back.

Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image

Is your data safely off device?
