Hi Hank17. Welcome to the TenForums @hank17.
Have you tried running the Update Trouble shooter.
Troubleshoot Problems in Windows 10 with Troubleshooters Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
Windows key + S, search bar appears, type troubleshooting into search bar, troubleshooting appears at top. Click it, window opens, lower right side "Fix problems with Windows Update", click. Window opens, click on “advance”, click on Run as administrator, click “Next”. Should run clean. If not run again.
You likely could also do a an inplace repair / upgrade. This process will update you to the Creators update. While nothing should happen to your data files I recommend backing them up off machine.
I would also recommend using a tool like Macrium Reflect to create an Image so you can get back to where you started, just in case. We have tutorial here.

In place repair / upgrade, likely need 8GB key.

thanks ken,got to run as admin clicked run, went to detecting problems, is this correct, did its thing, came back nothing detected. As I said I'm comp illiterate, this might be the easyist question ever, if I uninstall windows 10,and re install windows 8.1 (I have disc) will all my docs, music photo's etc be saved, and the obviously reopened. thanks dave h

No. If you re-install you will likely loose your info.
Not sure how much data you have but external drives from Western Digital and Seagate are cheap. 1TbB for less than $100US.
You need a backup anyway if your data is important. Sooner or later you could have a drive failure, a power surge or fall victim to Ransomware.
Copying it is simple.
Then run the in place upgrade.

thanks ken I now have a clear plan of action, I only wasted 2 weeks trying everybody else "advice". Thanks again ken

Please clarify whether you want to tune up windows 10 version 1511, upgrade windows 10 1511 to version 1703, or return to windows 8,1.
Windows 10 version 1511 has been upgraded to 1607 and then 1703.
The latest version is 1703 build 15063.413
You can fix many problems with windows 10 with a flash drive.
If you have a flash drive that you can format (cleans all content on the flash drive) then you can install a windows 10 iso onto the flash drive. The flash drive then functions in a similar fashion (not identical) as the disk drive.
To create a windows 10 iso: Download Windows 10
You can use the windows update on the computer or you can use the windows 10 iso to update windows. It would be called an in place upgrade or an in place upgrade repair.
This is a link: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials
To get windows 10 tuned up and/or upgraded:
Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste these commands:
10 Ways to Open the Command Prompt in Windows 10
Or a three step method to open administrative command prompt using the keyboard:
Keyboard:
type: win + x (simultaneously)
type: a
type: alt + y (simultaneously)
Once administrative command prompt is open type or copy and paste these commands:
1) winver (in the about windows pop up view your windows version and build and post into the thread)
2) sfc /scannow (this will take < 15 minutes to run and will check the integrity of the operating system)
3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (this will take < 15 minutes and will also check the integrity of the operating system. If there were any integrity violations with #2 or scannow it is capable of fixing them.)
4) chkdsk /scan (this will check the files on your drive)(it typically takes < 5 minutes)(if there were problems with the drive it will attempt to fix the problems on the next boot if you type chkdsk /spotfix)
When the above steps have completed:
right click the top bar or the title bar of the administrative command prompt box
left click on edit then select all
right click the top bar or title bar again
left click edit then copy
paste into the thread
5) in the left lower corner search type windows updates
perform windows updates and post any failed KB# with error code into the thread.
When windows updates have completed:
In the left lower corner type winver.
In the pop up about windows view the windows version and build and post into the thread.
For any problems along the way use the Microsoft snipping tool and post images into the thread.
