Trouble upgrading 20H2 with windows update

I'm running 10 version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.630) x64. Windows update tries to install KB4592438 2020-12 Cumulative update. Each time I run the windows upgrade, it fails saying some files are missing or have problems. Here is what I have tried: sfc /scannow, various flavors of DISM, stopped services, cleared out the upgrade cache, and restarted services. All of these result in exactly the same message.

Should I be worried about this? Can I ignore this? What other steps should I try?

Try downloading it directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog and see if that will allow you to install it. To do so, use this link to download:

    http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/...35f33c38e6.msu

Once downloaded, right-click the file, select properties, and then select the option to unblock the download like this:

Double-click the file to install it.

Let me know if that gets you past the error.

Thank you for these instructions. Everything seemed to be working correctly until the end of the installation, when this dialog appeared:

I tried 4 times to install this same update on a neighbours HP laptop and gave up. It doesn't help you but I think it points to something wrong with the update not being fully compatible with your system. Maybe January patch Tuesday update will work and supersede it anyway so, for now, ignore it.

Yeah, that's an odd. I'm not really sure what to think about that. If I find any other ideas I'll let you know.

When WU gets wonky, I find the batch file in Brink's excellent TF tutorial How to Reset Windows Update in Windows 10 almost always fixes things. Might be worth a try. But as other posters have observed, if that doesn't do the trick, you can wait for next month's updates to come along and hope they work instead.

y, it took a few months actually before my computer would successfully install ver 2004. I didn't want to go thru the process of closing all drivers, unplugging everything and who know what else to try to do it when it came out. I should try 20H2 but I'm sure I'll get the same error msg I've got for years on early updates.

That`s odd, you should have gotten the update message by now.

20H2 just unlocks some features already in 2004, you don`t have to unplug anything.

Try this > TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1), and do a clean install.
    It work for me.
