For windows updates view the options to uninstall updates.
Enter KB4023834 into the search and see if it can be uninstalled.
If it can be uninstalled that will confirm that it is installed.
I did as you instructed and it shows the update. But I feel real shaky about just assuming this "critical" update has been installed when the update history shows it has failed.

Mine has done that on a few occasions. I just ask it to try again and all works out fine.
Where is it that you click on "try again?" I'm not following something here because another poster said the same thing.

dalchina, I did this already and answered you in my post #4 that it brought up another update but not the one in question, 4023834. So I still don't know for sure what I should do about this update. It's still showing as failed, even though when I go to the Uninstall Updates section and enter KB4023834 it brings it up that it can be uninstalled -- yet Update History shows that it was not installed, that installation failed.

I ran the search for updates again and another update came up, but it was not this one.
    Ok, sorry I misread that..

Sometimes where an update is missed, it becomes redundant as it is subsumed in a subsequent cumulative update. So if W Update is offering you a different one, should be fine.

The News section here can be used to find updates for a particular build if you search it, so you can see if there's been a later update.

    That particular update is here:
    Microsoft Update Catalog
    - if you manually download it, and your system is up to date via Windows Update, you should find you get a message sthg like 'This update is not applicable to your system' (or equivalent)

This archive is too old to list it:

Well, i just downloaded the installer, again, from Microsoft update Catalog and tried to run it and immediately get a popup telling me: Update for Windows (KB4023634) is already installed on this computer, so I guess i will have to believe that it is installed and working. Thanks for your help ... yours and others who helped.

    Great.
In the left lower corner search type winver.
In the pop up about windows view your windows version and build and post into the thread.

As of today, 6/16/2017 the latest version and build are: Version 1703, Build 15063.413
